The Classic ‘Everywhere’ Balm from Lanolips That I *Always* Buy in Bulk

In my opinion, everyone needs a little tube of SOS for all skin-related scenarios. My all-time favourite ‘everything’ product is Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm (£10.99 from Boots UK /$13.20 from Look Fantastic US). Here’s why…

Whether it’s a dry skin emergency or if I just want to stay on top of hydration, this product is my absolute go-to and I always have one to hand.

And when I say to hand, I’m a little excessive. There’s one in my car, another in my bag, one in my other bag, and there’s even one next to my sofa for when I’m so comfortable I don’t want to get up.

I know, that’s a lot of Superbalms. But it sorts out every dry skin woe in a flash and I’m kind of addicted.

What makes it addictive

What makes it so good is that you can apply it anywhere on the surface of the skin. For example, if I’ve got dry, itchy elbows I can massage some in there. If I’m experiencing parched lips, I can use it as a lip balm. When my feet have seen better days and are a little cracked, on it goes. And I can even use it as a cuticle hydrator too.

Being 100% natural, it is even safe to use as a nipple cream when breast-feeding your newborn baby, so sensitive skin types should rejoice at the sight of it too.

Its not-so-secret ingredient is ultra pure grade lanolin, the molecular structure of which imitates human oils. And it holds a whopping 400 times its own weight in moisture. So, you could say it was just a little bit hydrating.

It’s fragrance free too which is a major plus as not everyone wants or likes that sickly sweet smell that some balms contain. So it really is the most inoffensive product – yet so effective – and that must be why I have so many of them.

The balm itself is clear and super dense. So dense in fact that squeezing it out of the tube is a little tricky. Press harder than you normally would and it’ll eventually be coaxed out. But you only need a small amount as this stuff packs a punch when it comes to hydrating the skin.

To get the best out of it, warm some between your fingers first, then apply to your chosen area. The result is not in any way sticky. Granted, initially it feels quite greasy. But this is only on application and after a few minutes it sinks in revealing softer than soft skin.

Above and beyond

The clever people at Lanolips obviously read the brief because you can buy this product in packs of two. Clearly they know that buying one just isn’t enough!  I have even been known to use a tiny bit of it to tame a mild case of frizzy hair on-the-go at a time when I had nothing else to hand. Name me someone who can’t make use of it. I’ll wait.

What other users are saying

Other users seem to agree with me. An anonymous user on says, “I love it so so much I use it multiple times a day no matter what. Looks so clean and glossy, leaves no stickiness or white lines. Repurchased so many times.”

And Natalie says, “Huge difference in my lips since using this. Also been using it under my eyes after all my moisturiser as a barrier. Amazing on cuticles and gorgeous after putting my makeup on by dabbing on my cheekbones for a healthy glow highlight. Very versatile product.”

Overall value for money

The set of two costs £18 which I think is a bargain given that you don’t need to use much, and it lasts. Make sure you choose two places to keep them that are a solid part of your daily routine (gym bag/baby changing bag/car/bedside table etc) and you will get your money’s worth. If you’re opting to buy just one, it’ll cost £10.99 so buying two is actually far more cost effective. And I can pretty much guarantee you will be buying a second one anyway…

The takeaway

For every dry area you can think of on the surface of your skin, get yourself one of these miracle tubes. If you’re someone who needs regular dry skin maintenance, trust me, it’ll be your saviour.

Remember to push the tube hard and then warm it between your fingers as this loosens the balm a little and it’s then easier to blend in. And choose two (or three, or four..) places to keep your tubes in so that you’re never without. It’s definitely not a life or death situation – let’s be honest – but in that moment, you will feel so smug that you had a tube handy.
