I’m going away in two weeks and I’m worried about messing up my skincare routine. My skin always looks amazing on holiday and then awful again within a week of getting home. Is it the sun, less stress, different food, or is it because I’m changing my routine?
Jordan says:
“Vacation skin” is a very real thing. This is a common concern among many of my clients and customers. There are a few reasons why you may be glowing on vacation and seeing less than stellar results after you return home. But, as you know by now, the one thing I will always recommend is consistency.
Chances are that you are less stressed when you are on vacation – you are enjoying your time, getting better sleep and soaking in the fun and restorative vibes. While these factors alone can contribute to your vacation glow, you can enhance those benefits by keeping consistent with your skincare regimen on your trip.
Here are a few important things to keep in mind as you get ready for your holiday:
- Don’t change up your routine. There is no need to suddenly add new products into the mix. If anything, I would simplify it, keeping the three heavy hitters of a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen as your must-haves. If there is an SPF you already love, double down on that. It will be your best friend.
- If you are going on a beach vacation or will be engaging in outdoor sightseeing tours which require you to wear more SPF than usual, you must be extremely thorough about cleansing your skin. I always recommend double cleansing at nighttime when you have applied more than one layer of SPF during the day to ensure that the buildup from the day is thoroughly removed. Using a clean washcloth to remove one or both cleanses can also aid in SPF and makeup removal. This will contribute to your long-term glow by keeping your pores clear. Insufficient cleansing is often the culprit behind skin that is behaving badly upon returning home.
- Once you return home, keep up with everything you were doing on vacation – a consistent and simplified skincare routine, incorporating SPF usage and thorough cleansing. After a few days, you can slowly add anything back in that you may have removed from your routine while traveling.
Keeping things consistent before, during and after your trip, protecting your skin and cleansing properly will ensure your skin glows on vacation AND beyond!
