The £8.99 Sally Hansen Cuticle Balm That’s Transforming My Nails

When it comes to nails, I love getting a BIAB or gel set, but I also love having strong, natural nails because I can change the polish colour whenever I want rather than being stuck with the same design for a month.

And even though I’ve been blessed with my Nana’s strong nails, my cuticles and the skin around my nails can get really dry, making my nails more brittle.

Sally Hansen is a classic brand for nail products, and I’m a fan of their Hard as Nails nail strengthener. So when I saw their Cuticle Rehab Oil Balm for £8.99 in Boots, I thought – and for that price –  I’d give it a go!

Here’s how I got on.

The product and ingredients

Healthy nails are based on healthy cuticles and, recently, mine have been drier than usual. This is most likely because summer is just coming to an end and I’ve been spending a lot of time in the sea and the pool, I went a bit crazy on the antibacterial gel on a few recent flights (which is known for drying since it’s basically pure alcohol), and my hands have been drier because of sun exposure.

Either way, I needed something to put the moisture back into my hands and cuticles.

Sally Hansen’s Cuticle Rehab Oil Balm is a “multi-purpose solid oil in a convenient balm for cuticle care on the go”, and it’s a super easy-to-use twist-up stick that you can just chuck into your handbag/suitcase/pocket/purse/makeup bag.

The formula infused with Aloe, Safflower Oil and Vitamin E Oil promotes healthy skin and nails, and it promises to provide instant relief for dry cuticles and hands, preventing them from cracking and peeling.

According to the brand, 80% of users agree that their nails looked more conditioned after a week of using the balm, so trying it was a no-brainer.

How to use it

It comes in a light pink 5.8ml stick that fits right into my handbag or makeup bag, so it really is easy to use on the go (the only thing I am a bit worried about is it melting on a hot day.)

Forget getting out a bottle of oil and needing to paint each nail, balancing the bottle on your knees so it doesn’t spill everywhere – this stick can be used on your train or bus commute, in the car (though I don’t advise using it while driving!), sat at your desk in the office, or watching TV at home. That’s my kind of product.

Simply smooth the balm over your nails and cuticles and massage it in. No dripping, no spilling.

It can be used over nail polish and other dry areas on your hands, and the brand advises using it at least once a day for maximum results.

My results

Firstly, this smells AMAZING. It’s got a sweet scent like vanilla cake that has me putting my hands to my nose more often, and it makes it really enjoyable to use.

The texture is balmy but not too oily and, unlike oils in a bottle, it doesn’t drip anywhere and it doesn’t disappear on the nails 5 minutes after application. In fact, some nail oils I’ve used previously have actually made my nails feel drier!

Once you start applying it on your nails, cuticles, and hands, it melts into a buttery texture and sinks in pretty fast, leaving shiny nails and hydrated cuticles.

After a week of use, I also noticed any ridges I had on my nails felt smoother, and there were no flaky bits on the ends of my nails that I usually have to file away.

What other people have to say

On the Boots UK website, mylama writes “I love the convince of this cuticle balm. I wash my hand [sic] at work so often that my cuticles and nails get dry and brittle. I keep this in my purse and use it daily. It really softens my cuticles and even seems to help my nails too!”

People on the website have said this product doesn’t twist up, and I thought the same when I tried to twist it, but it DOES twist like a lipstick and reveals quite a lot of extra product! jojojojo says “The reviews claiming this does not twist up are incorrect. The end that looks like it ought to twist DOES twist, it just needs a little force the first time and will make a loud click. “What you see” is about half the product you actually get :)”

While valentinag246 writes  “Such a cool product! I love my cuticle oil in general, but it takes a lot of time to absorb. This product is super ingenious, the balmy texture makes it a mess free option to oil and it’s great on the go. Definitely worth the money”

The takeaway

I will definitely keep using this balm! I love the smell, how easy it is to use, the amount of product you get, and how moisturising it feels. It makes my cuticles soft enough to gently push back and hydrates any dry patches I have on my hands without feeling too greasy.

I hope to see my nails continue to be less flaky, which will help with more growth and better, healthier nails!
