Ruby Hammer MBE is a celebrity makeup artist, brand founder and regular Live That Glow columnist. She has been providing makeup education for more than 30 years. Here, she advises a reader on how to get eyebrows to sit better without doing a full brow look.

My brows are super long and coarse and one is a different shape and sits higher than the other. I’m not really into doing full brow makeup. How do I use a gel or wax product to make them less unruly and look more even?

Ruby says:

First, remember: brows are sisters, not twins. Absolute symmetry is unrealistic and, frankly, unnecessary. What you’re aiming for is balance—not duplication.

For long, coarse, uneven brows where you don’t want to commit to full brow makeup, your best solution is texture and control. Choose a strong-hold clear or tinted brow gel like the Ruby Hammer Mascara & Brow Duo—the kind that sets and grips, not just adds shine.

Brush the hairs upward and slightly outward—lifting opens the face and creates a fresher frame for the eyes. For the asymmetry: brush the higher brow slightly flatter, and the lower brow slightly more lifted. It’s subtle, but effective. You’re sculpting balance through direction, not product buildup (too much product and instead of even brows you will get flaky, spiky brows).

If your brows are very wiry or resistant, prep with a touch of brow wax first. Warm it between fingers, then press into brows to soften the texture before applying gel. This helps set them in place without stiffness.

The aim is natural polish—clean, intentional brows that don’t overpower your face. You’re not trying to erase individuality; you’re simply refining it.
