You only have to switch on TV or scroll through TikTok to know that claw clips are making a huge comeback (hands up who remembers them in the 90s!) Whether they’re sweeping your hair up into a twisted ‘do or helping it look chic in a low bun, these easy peasy clips are super fashionable, not to mention oh-so practical!

“Once only used when you needed a quick option, there are now a wide selection of more decorative hair claw clips and they are quickly becoming the ultimate quick-fix accessory,” explains Edd Moss, creative ambassador for Headmasters. “They’re effortless, stylish, and kind to your hair.”

So, in the name of Fall 2025 inspiration, we thought we would put together a guide on how to wear yours, with help from some expert tips from Moss. Once you read this, you won’t want to leave the house without one. Phone, wallet, keys, claw clip!

1. The twist up, tuck under

This style gets your hair off your face whilst looking effortlessly chic. “Sweep your hair back, twist it upwards, tuck the ends back into the twist and secure it with a claw clip,” Moss says.

You’ll need the right sized clip for this one. “The thicker your hair, the bigger the claw clip you need,” he adds. And if you want your style to blend, “choose a claw clip that is close to your hair colour to keep it more discreet.”

2. The classic half up, half down

For a pretty and feminine style, the half up, half down look is a great compromise for the indecisive who want their hair up, but not all the way. “Gather the top section of your hair and clip it at the crown,” Moss says. “[It’s] perfect for keeping hair out of your face while still showing off your length.”

And he says you can size down too. “Here you can use a smaller claw clip, and you can either make a feature of it by choosing one with decoration – or to be subtle stick close to your own hair colour.”

3. The low twist

The classic low bun (but make it 2025). “Twist your hair at the nape of your neck and tuck the ends in before clipping,” explains Moss. “This gives a sleek, polished look in seconds.” As well as one big clip, you’ll want to get a variety of sizes for this one. “Here use a few small claw clips to secure around the bun,” Moss says. Or you can use more subtle hair pins and leave your big clip as the star of the show.

4. The loose twist

Basically, look number 1, but a bit messier. “A looser, softer take on the classic twist – do the twist but with less tension and when you get to the top you can secure [with a claw clip] and leave the ends to fan out of the top,” Moss says.  “Leave some strands out around your face for an effortlessly chic vibe and allow a looser finish.”

5. The romantic sweep

We all need a bit of romance in our lives, and this wistful style is ideal for those with wavy hair. “Sweep your hair to one side [as if you are going to tuck it behind the opposite ear] for a romantic, asymmetrical style that works perfectly for wavy hair,” Moss explains.

“Secure it with a clip, either putting in all of the hair to make a side pony or loosely clipping up the swept side and leaving the other side loose and wavy.” And you can go all in with your clips. “You will want one with some decoration for this style and using several small ones also work really well here,” adds Moss

  • Loxx Haircare is a gorgeous new hair accessory brand, created by hairdresser to the stars, Chad Maxwell. The brand’s clips have curved teeth to help prevent damage to the hair and scalp, plus they’re non-slip too. Try their oh-so pretty Triple Flower Clip in Solaire, which is a perfect summer-to-fall juicy orange.
  • Accessorize’s 2-Pack Monochrome Claw Clips are too pretty not to buy immediately to stay chic through to the cooler months.
  • Coconut Lane’s Yellow Square Claw Clip is a fab shape and large in size, perfect for thicker, wavy hair. Its butter yellow colour too is still bang on trend for fall. Or move into a darker feel with this cute brown bow clip.

The takeaway

So, claw clips have officially made their return, and we are here for it! “Claw clips aren’t just a throwback, they’re a modern, versatile tool for creating quick, chic hairstyles without heat or fuss and with such a great selection to choose from,” says Moss

And, apart from being kind to hair and easy to use, the other great thing about claw clips is that you can choose how much yours stands out by either blending yours in with your hair colour or getting a cute, decorative one. “You can make them as fancy or discreet as you want,” he adds.
