When it comes to buying an LED face mask, consumers want an established brand that really knows its stuff. I had heard on the grapevine that Project E Beauty was just that and, having decided to give the LED approach another try (I had tried and failed a few years prior), I did some digging.

Founded in 2012, I discovered that Project E Beauty was created to bring advanced, clinic-level skincare technology to a bigger audience. The brand promises to combine innovation with a strong commitment to evidence-based treatments and customer safety, ensuring every product is thoroughly tested before it launches.

With a focus on “skinimilism,” Project E Beauty aims to design smart, multitasking devices that simplify your routine while delivering real, visible results at home. Cue, the LumaLux Face Pro LED Red Light Therapy Mask (£309), my – hopefully – new best friend.

This device comes with a whole lot of evidence to suggest it’s one of the best in the business. The real-world before and after photos posted by users really do speak for themselves and even a glowing review by Alex Fergus on his ever-growing YouTube channel has been doing the rounds. So what was stopping me and my 42-year-old skin from giving it a go? Nothing, it turns out.

My skin is naturally quite oily but as time goes on, I’ve noticed it getting drier. As a result, it can be difficult to find the right balance between ‘matte and moisture’ so adding an LED mask into the mix excited me. After all, if I used it consistently, perhaps it would provide my skin with the rejuvenation it needs to be better balanced going forward.

I was also interested in addressing my fine lines and wrinkles. Whilst I didn’t expect them to fully go away, I was intrigued by whether a mask like this could reduce their appearance over time.

So, how did I get on? Keep scrolling to find out.

The product details

The LumaLux Face is £309 and is available on the Project E Beauty website, Selfridges, Reverieluxe, and Healf. It is Project E Beauty’s most advanced LED mask thanks to its 8 treatment modes (5 wavelengths, 8 combination modes) and 800 LED lights which is significantly more than the brand’s competitors.  This ensures maximum coverage and means even the user’s lips are covered.

The mask addresses many common skincare concerns, including hyperpigmentation, anti-ageing and blemishes. The treatment modes in full are:

  • Red LED light – reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Infrared Light – deep skin renewal
  • Deep Infrared light – targets static wrinkles
  • Blue LED light – destroys blemish-causing bacteria, prevents breakouts and regulates oil production
  • Green LED light – fades dark spots, combats hyperpigmentation and balances skin tone
  • Purple LED light – combines the benefits of blue and red light to target uneven skin tone and inflammation
  • Cyan LED light – reduces redness, swollen capillaries, blemishes and inflammation
  • Yellow LED light – calms sensitive skin, reduces redness and removes toxins from the skin
  • White LED light – powerful combination of light improves overall skin health for total rejuvenation.

What’s different about this device is that the treatment time is 3 minutes (you can opt for 6, but the brand recommends wearing it for 3 when using daily).

This is significantly shorter than many of its competitors and it promises to be noticeably more comfortable than others too thanks to its silicone eye pads. The flexibility of the silicone mask as a whole also ensures that the LEDs can access every part of your face, which isn’t guaranteed with harder, non-silicone devices.

Impressively, the mask comes with a 60-day trial so you can try it for a few months and still send it back if you’re not happy with the results.

“Surely this must mean it works”, I thought, further convinced by the clinical trial results which reports that it reduces wrinkles, improves blemishes and increases cellular rejuvenation. Ok, now I was ready.

How I tested the LumaLux Face LED Light Therapy Mask

I had tested out an LED mask a few years prior to using the LumaLux Face and whilst it didn’t give me the long-term results I was looking for, my skin reacted well to the LED lights, and I didn’t experience any discomfort or side effects.

This gave me the confidence to go straight in with using the LumaLux Face as regularly as possible, so I decided to use it daily for three minutes per session.

I tested it every evening for two weeks and made sure my skin was cleansed beforehand and then adequately hydrated with my usual night serum and moisturiser afterwards.

It is worth noting that most brands, including Project E Beauty, suggest testing an LED mask for longer than two weeks as this isn’t long enough to assess long-term collagen stimulation (which takes at least 8-12 weeks). 14 days is enough time however to evaluate elements like comfort, skin response, useability and visible early changes, rather than structural collagen remodelling.

First impressions

On opening the box and first holding the mask, I was pleased with the flexibility of it – it bended around my hands easily and felt smooth. This instantly told me it would be comfortable to wear and that I wouldn’t be desperate for the minutes to go by quickly when using it.

The device comes with a charging cable, controller, a handy carry bag and of course, the user manual. Before using the mask, I charged it up for five hours as instructed and the icon on the controller made it easy to tell when it was both charging and fully charged.

It has a Velcro fastening at the back so is super easy to secure when wearing it, just make sure you fasten the straps up towards the top of your head and not too low. Fastening it low will mean that you’re not wearing the mask to its full potential as it won’t be placed fully around the contours of your face or on your lips.

Once it’s on, controlling the mask is foolproof. Press the power button for two seconds and the default mode (red, infrared + deep infrared) will automatically come on. You can then change the treatment mode with short presses of the mode button until you reach the colour you need. Once you have landed on the one you want, it will automatically start a three-minute session, however if you want longer, hold down the mode button, and it will go up to six.

The mask felt instantly comfortable, as if it were tailor made for my face. Unlike the device I tried a few years ago, I didn’t feel claustrophobic or like I needed to regulate my breathing wearing it. It was soft – almost squishy – and once you get used to the brightness of the lights, you can just about do anything in those three minutes (although I personally recommend relaxing!) The other thing I noticed was that it didn’t feel sore on my nose – harder devices can really press down on it while you’re wearing them and even leave a short-term mark.

Once my three minutes were up, the mask automatically shut down – the lights went off and it beeped to let me know I was finished for the day. I gave it a clean and slipped it back into its carry bag – easy peasy.

My results

I needed to pick a skincare concern and stick with it when testing this mask, so I chose mode 1 – red, infrared + deep infrared for reducing fine lines and wrinkles as that aligned the most with what I wanted to achieve from it.

First of all my tolerance to this device has been second to none. I experienced zero discomfort and my skin carried on as normal throughout the initial testing period. I did experience a large breakout during the first week, however I knew from where I was in my hormonal cycle that this was not down to the mask. In fact, I actually think the mask helped to clear up the breakout quicker than normal.

Immediately after each use I noticed my skin would be slightly flushed – only slightly – and it felt hydrated and firm. Almost as if I had already applied my nighttime hydration products a few hours before. Then, after actually applying them, my skin felt supple and looked satisfyingly glowy. Great teamwork.

Noticeable changes since I started using this mask include firmer, sturdier skin – it hasn’t felt too loose or saggy and I had spotted this benefit by the end of the first week of use. I have also noticed my oil production has lessened.

I could probably do with reducing my use of the mask down to around five times a week, rather than every day, as my skin started to feel a little tighter than usual by the middle of the second week. However my makeup seems to go on more seamlessly in the mornings now which I think has a lot to do with my skin being better balanced, and there is a gradual glow forming when I wake up in the mornings – something I’ve always strived for.

The commitment needed when it comes to using this mask is minimal. Hand on heart, it is the easiest process. I made sure I kept the mask next to my sofa and got myself into a routine of cleansing my skin, then going downstairs and wearing it whilst watching TV in the evenings. It’s so simple to put on and those three minutes just fly by. It really is a no brainer.

The takeaway

Honestly? If you’re too busy to wear this foolproof, Velcro mask for three minutes a day then it might be worth reconsidering how packed your routine really is. Just slip it back into the carry bag and pop it back down next to the sofa or bed when you’re done – you don’t even have to move positions!

It’s not painful, uncomfortable or in any way high maintenance and three minutes really is nothing. Wear it while you wait for the kettle to boil, during the ad break of your favourite TV show or when you’re hanging up the washing. I love that it helped clear up my breakout quickly and I’m enjoying the feel of firmer skin, particularly on my forehead.

I will certainly continue to use it in the weeks to come and look forward to seeing some long-term changes. But for now, I’m very happy with the results.
