If you experience hair thinning, you’ll probably already know about its causes – and the solutions you can try from the comfort of home. But what about the targeted treatments you can have in-office that are more powerful than treating the problem yourself?

We’ve spoken to expert Dr Sabika Karim, an aesthetic doctor and founder of Skin Medical, to find out which in-office treatments she recommends if thinning is getting you down.

From trying LED therapy to enhance follicle function, to booking in for a course of top tier cleansing and exfoliation to boost circulation, here are all the non-surgical in-clinic solutions if your hair is struggling in the growth department.

Why professional hair treatments are trending

“Whether you’re looking to address hair loss due to natural ageing, hormonal shifts, weight loss medication or genetics, advances in non-surgical hair restoration and maintenance treatments such as cold plasma, exosomes, red light therapy and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy are providing effective solutions to combat hair loss naturally and without surgery,” explains Dr Karim.

And she says these treatments are minimally invasive. “They’re not just about stimulating hair, they’re about improving the biology that supports it.”

Kerajuv and hair biosomes

Describing it as the next generation of hair and scalp rejuvenation, Dr Karim says this is “the ultimate treat for your scalp.” It aims to promote hair growth by giving your scalp’s health a much-needed boost.

So how does it work? “By delivering pulsed cold plasma energy to the scalp, which stimulates follicle activity, improves blood flow and enhances nutrient delivery,” she explains. “It creates an optimal environment for stronger, thicker and healthier hair.

Rather than masking concerns, KeraJuv works at scalp level to improve circulation, reduce inflammation and support the hair growth cycle in a gentle, clinically driven way.”

Cold plasma technology is combined with high tech, targeted hair biosomes, the “next generation version of exosomes which are designed to deliver key regenerative signals in a more controlled consistent way,” Dr Karim continues. “Rather than just ‘switching on’ hair growth, they appear to improve the overall health of the follicle environment.”

So how is the treatment performed? “The process begins with the topical application of hair biosomes, then a handheld cold plasma device is then passed over the scalp, allowing the hair biosomes to penetrate deeper into the hair follicles and maximising their effectiveness,” Dr Karim explains.

Thankfully, it is not a painful procedure. “Despite the name, the treatment does not feel hot and does not burn the skin,” she adds. “The process is gentle, it requires no needles and no downtime. You may feel a mild tingling or cooling sensation but no pain.”

PRF treatment

PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin and is a more organic and long-lasting solution to hair thinning. “The treatment works by drawing a small amount of your blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich fibrin,” Dr Karim says.

“This concentrated PRF is rich in growth factors, platelets and bioactive proteins that are essential for tissue regeneration.”

This process results in a more potent treatment compared to PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and it is then “injected into targeted areas of the scalp (across all quadrants of the scalp and in targeted areas) where hair loss of thinning is most prominent,” explains Dr Karim. Blood flow and scalp health are boosted whilst dormant hair follicles are stimulated, resulting in healthier hair.

The treatment also quickens the body’s natural healing response. “This not only speeds up tissue repair at the treated site but also reduces the risk of complications, promoting a smoother recovery process,” she adds.

So what can you expect post-procedure? “Some swelling and bruising at the injection sites on the scalp is entirely normal and typically settles within a few days,” Dr Karim says. “Most patients can return to their normal routine shortly after their appointment.”

And when can you see results? “Results develop gradually over time,” she explains. “Most patients begin to notice improvements in hair density and scalp health within two to three months of starting their course of treatment.”

HydraScalp

Think of this as a shampoo and scalp exfoliation on steroids! You may already know that cleansing and exfoliating your scalp helps to unclog the hair follicles and boosts circulation, which makes for speedier and healthier hair growth.

“HydraScalp is a non-invasive three step treatment designed to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the scalp to promote healthier hair growth,” Dr Karim explains.

“It uses specialised technology to remove dirt, oil and product buildup from hair follicles while infusing nutrients, treating conditions like dryness, itching and thinning. It’s also ideal for alleviating common scalp concerns such as dryness, flaking, dandruff and irritation.”

How long does it take? “The procedure typically takes 45 minutes and requires no downtime, she says. “For optimal results it’s recommended to undertake a series of treatments 4-6 weeks apart.”

Dermalux Tri-Wave LED

You’ve probably heard of the benefits LED can provide the skin, but according to Dr Karim, Dermalux Tri-Wave LED is known to be one of the most powerful medical-grade LED devices available, and can encourage hair growth.

“It penetrates the scalp to support mitochondrial activity within the hair follicle, helping to improve cellular energy production and encourage healthier hair growth,” she says. “It’s a completely non-invasive treatment that works with the body’s natural processes to enhance follicle function over time.”

The treatment sets a strong foundation for hair growth, strengthens existing hair and improves the overall condition of the scalp.

“It is comfortable, requires no downtime and is suitable for a wide range of patients experiencing thinning or early hair loss.” It takes around 20 minutes, and a course of treatments consists of one to two treatments per week, over several weeks (not forgetting maintenance).

The takeaway

So if you’re in the market to change tack when it comes to hair thinning, consider going in-clinic. Yes, it’s more expensive, but if the at-home solutions aren’t quite cutting it and it’s affecting your confidence day to day, at least you know there are alternative non-invasive options that get the expert seal of approval.
