SPONSORED

Main image – Theo Decker

Midlife has a way of making small changes suddenly feel obvious. Hair may look thinner at the temples. The jawline can soften. Skin that once seemed permanently oily may become drier, while an old tendency to break out can make an unwelcome return. Add a little less muscle definition or more weight around the middle, and hormones make a tempting suspect.

Testosterone does influence skin, hair, muscle, fat distribution, sexual function, and bone health. But the mirror can’t tell you whether your testosterone is low. Aging, genetics, sun exposure, sleep, medications, and metabolic health can produce surprisingly similar changes.

So, where do hormones genuinely fit into the picture, and when is it worth looking beyond skincare or the gym?

First, not every midlife change is low testosterone

Testosterone can change with age, but men don’t experience an abrupt hormonal event equivalent to menopause. There is also plenty of individual variation. Research from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging found that bioavailable testosterone declined more consistently with age than total testosterone, which remained relatively stable until later life in the men studied.

That matters because “looking older” isn’t a diagnosis. If changes in appearance sit alongside persistent symptoms such as reduced libido, fewer spontaneous erections, loss of muscle bulk or unexplained fatigue, it may be worth discussing hormone testing with a clinician. Services such as Feel30 provide physician-led testosterone care with clinical blood testing and ongoing medical oversight, but testing should investigate symptoms rather than confirm a conclusion made from the mirror.

The Endocrine Society puts the diagnostic standard plainly: hypogonadism should be diagnosed “only in men with symptoms and signs consistent with testosterone deficiency and unequivocally and consistently low serum T concentrations.”

Why skin can feel different in midlife

Androgens, the hormone family that includes testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are active in the skin. Sebaceous glands respond to androgen signaling, which helps explain the close relationship between hormones, sebum production, and acne.

That doesn’t mean every shiny forehead or breakout after 40 points to a testosterone problem. Skin is aging in its own right. Over time, intrinsic aging can leave it thinner and drier, while accumulated ultraviolet exposure contributes to wrinkles, pigmentation changes, and loss of elasticity.

For most men, the useful response is refreshingly unglamorous: choose a gentle cleanser, moisturise if skin feels dry or tight, and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Those basics matter because sun damage builds over time and can contribute to both premature aging and skin cancer.

If acne suddenly becomes severe, painful, or persistent, a dermatologist can help work out what is going on rather than simply adding more products.

It is also worth knowing that acne can occur as a side effect of testosterone treatment. That is one reason hormone therapy belongs in a properly monitored medical setting rather than a self-directed anti-ageing plan.

Hair loss is about follicle sensitivity, not just a testosterone number

Hair is where the hormone story gets especially easy to oversimplify.

Male-pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, develops through an interaction between genetics and androgen activity. Research points to increased activity of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase and androgen receptors in susceptible follicles. DHT is particularly important because its effects can contribute to progressive follicle miniaturisation, producing finer, shorter hairs over time.

The keyword is susceptible. Two men can have very different hairlines despite having similar circulating hormone levels because genetics and local follicle sensitivity matter too. A receding hairline is therefore not reliable evidence of either “high testosterone” or testosterone deficiency.

It is also worth separating patterned thinning from sudden shedding. Rapid, patchy, or otherwise unusual hair loss deserves proper assessment, particularly when it appears alongside scalp irritation or other new symptoms. Hair loss can have several causes, and not all of them are hormonal.

Body composition can change what you see

Hormones can affect what you see below the neck, too. Testosterone supports muscle mass and bone health, while clinically low levels can be associated with reduced muscle bulk and increased body fat.

But the relationship isn’t one-way. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, sleep disorders, severe illness, and certain medications are also associated with low testosterone or can temporarily lower testosterone levels. Opioids and corticosteroids are among the medications that can affect hormone production.

In other words, gaining weight and feeling tired doesn’t automatically mean there is a testosterone problem.

Body composition can change the face as well. Shifts in facial volume and body fat, combined with normal skin aging, may make features look softer or more tired. The useful lesson is to treat appearance as a clue rather than a laboratory result.

Sleep, stress and health can muddy the picture

Many symptoms popularly blamed on low testosterone are frustratingly non-specific. Poor sleep can leave you exhausted and make training harder. Depression can affect energy, concentration and libido. Chronic illness can influence strength and body weight.

That overlap is why a blood test is only one part of the assessment.

Testosterone also varies over the course of the day and can be temporarily affected by illness, nutrition and other factors. The American Urological Association recommends that a low-testosterone diagnosis should be based on two total testosterone measurements taken on separate occasions in the early morning. Symptoms or signs must also be present for a clinical diagnosis of testosterone deficiency.

So, a single result, particularly without symptoms, shouldn’t become a verdict on how well or badly someone is ageing.

Where testosterone therapy fits – and where it does not

For men with confirmed hypogonadism, testosterone replacement therapy can be an appropriate medical treatment. It isn’t a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles, hair loss, a changing jawline, or the ordinary passage of time.

The US Food and Drug Administration says testosterone products are approved for men with low testosterone associated with a medical condition and retain a limitation of use concerning age-related hypogonadism.

Treatment also comes with trade-offs. Testosterone can increase red blood cell levels, cause acne, affect fertility, and raise blood pressure, so clinical follow-up matters. Exogenous testosterone can suppress sperm production, making fertility plans an important part of the conversation before treatment begins.

The safety picture has also changed as evidence has developed. In February 2025, the FDA removed previous boxed-warning language concerning increased cardiovascular risk after reviewing the large TRAVERSE trial. At the same time, it required class-wide labeling changes warning that testosterone products can increase blood pressure.

Good hormone care, then, isn’t about chasing youth or one supposedly “perfect” number. It is about putting symptoms, repeated laboratory results, medical history, and personal goals together.

The takeaway

The mirror can tell you that something has changed. It can’t tell you why.

Thinner hair may involve DHT and genetic susceptibility. Drier or more lined skin may owe more to natural aging and years of UV exposure. A change in muscle or body fat can sometimes accompany testosterone deficiency, but sleep, metabolic health, medication, and other medical issues can create a similar picture.

Midlife changes deserve curiosity rather than panic. Start with the things that benefit almost everyone: sensible skincare, daily sun protection, regular exercise, adequate sleep and attention to general health. If physical changes arrive alongside persistent sexual, energy-related or other symptoms associated with testosterone deficiency, that is the point to bring a clinician into the conversation.

The goal doesn’t need to be making 45 look like 25. It is understanding what your body is telling you – and acting on evidence rather than assumptions.

We all have that one feature that feels most like us. For me, it’s my brows.

Bushy and bold, they’re the feature I love most about myself, and I genuinely can’t imagine life (or my face) without them. They also remind me of my grandfather, who I have to thank for passing them on.

Having naturally full brows does mean I ask quite a lot from my brow products, though. A gel that gives a lovely fluffy effect on finer brows doesn’t necessarily have enough hold to keep mine in place, while anything too heavy can quickly make all that hair look stiff or overloaded. I want hold and definition, but I still want my brows to look like brows.

I’d like to think I’ve become something of a brow gel connoisseur over the years. My brows have tested some of the biggest names on the beauty market, from cult classics to new launches, and these are some of the formulas that truly stand up to the challenge. For all brow needs.

1. Best for keeping hairs in place: Kosas Air Brow Clear Lifting Treatment Gel

If you’re after that laminated brow look (without having to book in at the salon every six weeks), you’ve found it. One sweep through with this Kosas gel and your hairs won’t move for the rest of the day. I love it for the mornings I feel like adding a lot of volume (that won’t drop an hour or two in).

It’s also a little more skincare-minded than your average brow gel. The clear formula contains panthenol, sodium hyaluronate and biotinoyl tripeptide-1, alongside glycerin and other humectants. In other words, while its immediate job is obviously to lift and set the brows, there are conditioning ingredients in the mix too.

The clear finish also means you can really load up on the fluffiness without simultaneously adding more colour – particularly useful if, like me, your brows already bring plenty of that themselves.

Kosas Air Brow Clear Lifting Treatment Gel is £20 from Cult Beauty UK and $26 from Sephora US.

2. Best for colour tint: Merit Brow 1980

My brows are already quite dark, but I still like making them a statement. In my experience, the best gel for adding a colour tint is this one from Merit. It’s rich in pigment, and leaves your brows looking and feeling really fluffy. (Never with the dreaded crunch.)

Brow 1980 is actually described by Merit as a volumising pomade, and the formula has been designed to add colour and body while keeping the hold flexible. Mineral pigments and kaolin clay help build that natural-looking colour and fullness, while panthenol – AKA pro-vitamin B5 – is included to condition the brow hairs.

There’s also carnauba wax to help thicken and add shine. The tapered precision brush is another nice touch, particularly when you want to add colour without accidentally painting half your forehead in the process.

Merit Brow 1980 is £21 from Sephora UK and $24 from Sephora US.

3. Best clear gel: Ilia In Frame Brow Gel

Sometimes less is more, and a clear brow gel will always do the trick. I love this one from Ilia for the no-makeup days where I still want to look put-together. The brush head applicator is very small, which is great for a precise application.

The formula itself is lightweight and designed to give brows a lifted but still natural finish, rather than making them look obviously slicked down. Ilia says it’s clinically proven to hold brows in place for eight hours and has been formulated to resist flaking, while hydrolysed quinoa and the brand’s Hair Renewal Complex are included to help brows look fuller and healthier over time.

For me, that combination of an invisible finish and such a precise little applicator makes it particularly good when I want my brows to look groomed without looking overly “done”.

Ilia In Frame Brow Gel is £25 from Space NK UK and $25 from Sephora US.

4. Best for already bushy brows: Hourglass Arch Brow Volumising Fiber Gel

You could argue that thick brows don’t need much doing to them. I would counter simply: the bushier the better. In particular, I’d recommend this pick from Hourglass as the brush is quite thick and dense. Great for longer hairs and leaves a lovely fluffy payoff that lasts all day.

The secret to the extra volume here is microfibres, which are suspended within the formula and designed to build both colour and fullness as you brush it through. The hold is deliberately soft and flexible rather than stiff, and Hourglass says the formula is both smudge- and flake-proof. There’s also a clever dual-sided brush, with shorter and longer bristles so you can control how much product you’re applying.

On already-full brows, it really leans into what you’ve naturally got rather than trying to make everything look too neat or precise.

Hourglass Arch Brow Volumising Fiber Gel is £29 from Space NK UK and Hourglass US.

5. Best for thinner brows: Rare Beauty Brow Harmony Flexible Lifting Gel

If your brows are a little more tamed than mine, I think you’ll really like this gel from Rare Beauty. It has a smaller brush head so it’s perfect for precision with thinner brow shapes and shorter hairs. It also leaves a really nice amount of pigment. Not too thick or clumpy.

The formula is water-based and designed to give strong but flexible hold, with Rare Beauty specifically promising that it won’t feel stiff, sticky or crunchy. It’s waterproof too, so it’s made to stand up to both sweat and the skin’s natural oils throughout the day.

The tapered brush has soft but firm bristles designed to coat hairs from root to tip, which is particularly handy when you’re working with a finer brow and don’t want to swamp it with product. The tinted shades use iron oxides to add colour, giving you that extra bit of definition alongside the lift and hold.

Rare Beauty Brow Harmony Flexible Lifting Gel is £19 from Sephora UK and $21 from Sephora US.

The takeaway

If there’s one thing my brows have taught me, it’s that not all products are created equal. Whether you want more colour, more fluff or just something strong enough to keep every hair where you put it, there’s a formula here for you. Personally? I’ll always be team the-bushier-the-better.

SPONSORED

There is something undeniably relaxing about a Gua Sha routine until the tool begins dragging across the skin.

The facial oil underneath matters just as much as the tool itself. A well-chosen formula provides enough slip for smooth strokes while leaving the skin feeling comfortable, nourished, and glowing.

However, the richest or most expensive oil is not automatically the best choice. Texture, absorption rate, fragrance, and skin type all influence how enjoyable the routine feels.

We assessed the four best Gua Sha facial oils for glowing skin to find the formulas that balance skincare benefits with the cushioning texture needed for facial massage. Our selection includes lightweight everyday oils, richer ritual-worthy blends, and options for more particular skin types.

Why your facial oil can make or break a gua sha routine

A facial oil is not just a finishing touch. It forms a barrier between the tool and the skin, which minimises the frictional force that may cause skin pulling and discomfort and unnecessary redness.

Research also suggests that Gua Sha itself can temporarily affect circulation near the treated area. In a small study of 11 healthy adults, researchers observed a significant increase in surface microcirculation for up to 25 minutes after Gua Sha treatment.

While the study was performed on the back rather than the face, it offers some insight into the physiological effects of the massage technique.

Ingredients are important, but the formula as a whole is just as important. Rosehip, jojoba, camellia, grapeseed, squalane, and pomegranate seed oils are frequently used in facial blends, but no single oil is necessarily right for all skin types.

Ultimately, the best choice is a product that will provide you with controlled glide and is comfortable to wear and feels good on your skin so you can use it regularly.

Our Top Picks

WOWMD Gua Sha Face Oil

The standout quality: A silky botanical blend that offers massage-friendly glide without the dense finish of a traditional facial oil.

WOWMD Gua Sha Face Oil takes the top position because it strikes the most useful balance between skincare and facial massage. Its botanical formula combines rosehip, pomegranate seed, camellia, and vitamin E with additional conditioning oils.

Where it stands out is its texture. The oil is intended to feel silky and lightweight, providing enough movement for the Gua Sha tool without making the face feel excessively coated. That balance makes it practical for both a brief morning massage and a slower evening routine.

Rosehip and pomegranate seed oils contribute fatty acids and antioxidant compounds, while camellia oil helps give the formula its smooth, conditioning quality. It is also made without mineral oil, silicones, parabens, sulphates, phthalates, or drying alcohol.

The skin feels: Smooth and lightweight with a nourishing finish.

Best suited to: Normal, dry, or combination skin and anyone new to facial oils.

What gives it the edge: It feels specifically suited to massage while remaining wearable as part of an everyday skincare routine.

The trade-off: It is primarily available through the brand’s website.

Our verdict: The strongest all-rounder for readers who want reliable glide without committing to an especially rich or heavily fragranced oil.

VRAIKO Calanthe Orchid Gua Sha Face Oil Serum

The standout quality: A facial oil-serum hybrid that offers hydration and light slip at an accessible price.

VRAIKO Calanthe Orchid Gua Sha Face Oil Serum is designed for those who enjoy facial oils but don’t want to end up with a greasy film. It has a relatively light formula that includes Calanthe orchid extract, squalane, vitamin C derivatives, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.

Its serum-like consistency makes it particularly appealing for short Gua Sha sessions or daytime skincare. It absorbs faster than a simple massage oil, which makes the finish lighter and easier to build on under other products.

The formula is fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free. It’s also free of mineral oil, parabens, and phenoxyethanol, which can be a plus for consumers wanting a less complex daily product.

The skin feels: Light, hydrating, and relatively fast-absorbing.

Best suited to: Normal, oily, or combination skin and anyone who avoids rich oils.

What gives it the edge: It combines an approachable price with a modern, serum-like texture.

The trade-off: It may absorb too quickly for a long massage, and published customer feedback is limited.

Our verdict: A smart choice for quick routines, oil beginners, and readers working with a smaller beauty budget.

Wildling Empress Barrier Repair Oil

The standout quality: A rich, cushioning botanical oil created for slow and indulgent facial massage.

Wildling Empress Barrier Repair Oil feels less like a basic skincare product and more like part of a complete self-care ritual. It has a good amount of texture, which makes the Gua Sha tool glide easily and last longer than a lot of light-texture options.

This blend is formulated with olive fruit oil and a variety of botanical resins and extracts such as Balm of Gilead, frankincense, myrrh, guggul, opoponax, and labdanum. The oil has a unique earthy quality because of the ingredients without synthetic fragrance and essential oils.

The thicker texture could also be very comforting for dry or aging skin, particularly if applied in your nighttime skin care regime.

The skin feels: Rich, cushioning, and slow to absorb.

Best suited to: Dry or mature skin and longer evening massage sessions.

What gives it the edge: Its substantial texture continues to provide slip throughout an extended routine.

The trade-off: It has a premium price and a naturally earthy aroma that will not appeal to everyone.

Our verdict: The most indulgent option, but best reserved for those who genuinely enjoy richer botanical oils.

Ouiloe Gua Sha Facial Oil

The standout quality: An affordable, unscented blend designed specifically with blemish-prone skin in mind.

Ouiloe Gua Sha Facial Oil is a blend of grapeseed oil, Abyssinian oil, meadowfoam seed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, and vitamin E oils. This formula aims to provide a buttery-feel massage without the strong perfume or clumpy consistency found in some herbal formulas.

The scentless application might be attractive to individuals who may have sensitive skin that does not tolerate much fragrance. The two-ounce version also provides a better product amount than some of the smaller high-end ones, and it makes sense to use it regularly on the face, jawline, and neck.

But for those who have skin that is prone to blemishes, any facial oil might have unpredictable effects. Although the product is marketed as lightweight and non-comedogenic, customer experiences are mixed.

The skin feels: Lightweight, smooth, and unscented.

Best suited to: Blemish-prone skin and fragrance-sensitive users seeking an affordable option.

What gives it the edge: Its simple positioning, larger bottle, and accessible price.

The trade-off: Some reviewers mention breakouts or packaging issues.

Our verdict: A practical budget option, but one that should be introduced gradually and patch-tested carefully.

How to choose the right facial oil for gua sha

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Match the texture to your routine

A short morning massage works well with a light oil that absorbs cleanly. Longer evening routines generally need a richer texture that remains slippery for several minutes.

Consider your skin type

Dry and mature skin may appreciate nourishing oils such as camellia, rosehip, or squalane. Oily or blemish-prone skin may prefer lighter formulas, although no facial oil is guaranteed to be breakout-free, according to Consumer Health Digest.

Be realistic about fragrance

Aromatic botanical oils can make a routine feel luxurious, but they may not suit sensitive skin or anyone who prefers fragrance-free skincare.

Look beyond the ingredient list

A beautiful list of plant oils does not tell you how the product will actually feel. Texture, absorption, and the number of drops needed are just as important.

Think about regular use

A premium oil may be worthwhile for an occasional ritual. For daily Gua Sha, bottle size, price, and ease of repurchasing become more important.

How to use facial oil with gua sha

Use any water-based toner and/or serum first, if needed, on clean skin. Apply 2 to 3 drops of facial oil between your fingers and massage it around the face, jawline, and neck.

Hold the Gua Sha tool almost flat against the skin. Apply gentle pressure and slow strokes, not scraping with the narrow edge.

The tool should move without skipping or pulling. Add another drop if the oil absorbs before you finish, but avoid making the skin so slippery that the tool becomes difficult to control.

After your massage, you can let the oil stay on as the last step. Blot away any excess if necessary and clean the tool thoroughly after every use.

Common gua sha oil mistakes

Using too little oil is one of the most common mistakes. When the tool begins dragging, people often compensate by applying more pressure, which can lead to unnecessary redness or tenderness.

Using too much is not ideal either. An oversaturated face makes it harder to control the tool and can leave the routine feeling messy.

Other mistakes include choosing an oil solely because it is labelled “natural,” ignoring fragrance sensitivities, and introducing a rich blend across the entire face without patch testing it first.

Do not use Gua Sha over open skin, sunburn, or active irritation. Anyone who has recently undergone injectables, facial surgery, or an intensive professional treatment should ask their practitioner when massage can be resumed safely.

The takeaway

A great Gua Sha oil should do more than look appealing on a bathroom shelf. It needs to provide smooth, controlled movement, complement your skin type, and leave your complexion feeling comfortable once the massage is over.

Lightweight oils are often easier to use regularly, while richer formulas can transform an evening routine into something more indulgent.

The best choice is not necessarily the most expensive or ingredient-heavy; it is the one whose texture makes your Gua Sha practice feel effortless, enjoyable, and worth repeating.

FAQs:

Is facial oil necessary when using gua sha?

Some form of lubricating skincare is necessary to prevent the tool from dragging. Facial oil is popular because it usually provides longer-lasting slip than a moisturiser or serum.

What type of oil is best for gua sha?

The best oil gives the tool a controlled glide without feeling uncomfortable on your skin. Dry skin may prefer a richer formula, while oily or combination skin may favour a lighter blend.

Can gua sha facial oil clog pores?

Any facial product can potentially cause congestion depending on the formula and the individual. Those with blemish-prone skin should introduce new oils gradually and patch test first.

How many drops should I use?

Begin with two or three drops. Add one more if the tool starts to skip or drag before the massage is complete.

Should I wash the oil off afterward?

Usually, no. Facial oil can remain on as the final step of an evening routine. Use less or lightly blot the skin if the finish feels too rich.

Can I use gua sha every day?

Gentle Gua Sha can be incorporated regularly if the skin tolerates it. Start with a few sessions each week and avoid excessive pressure.

Red light therapy has become one of the fastest-growing at-home wellness technologies in the US, and the market has expanded to match. LED masks, handheld wands, wearable wraps, light pads, compact panels, full-body systems – the options are genuinely overwhelming. More choices sound like a good thing, but when every product claims to be the most powerful, most advanced, or most clinically proven, it gets harder to figure out what actually fits your needs.

The smarter approach is to ignore the superlatives and focus on how different device categories are built for different goals. As more devices enter the market, many consumers rely on educational resources like Red Light Therapy Digest to better understand wavelengths, treatment coverage, and the differences between device formats before committing to a purchase. That foundation matters a lot more than chasing the biggest number on a spec sheet.

Why choosing the right device matters more than choosing the most powerful one

There is no single best red light therapy device. That framing is one of the first marketing traps worth avoiding.

What actually determines whether a device works for you comes down to five things: the treatment area you need to cover, your specific wellness goals, how much time you have per session, your budget, and your lifestyle. A facial LED mask is excellent for skin rejuvenation but does nothing useful for post-workout muscle recovery across your back and legs. A full-body panel is great for whole-body sessions but impractical if you travel frequently or live in a small apartment.

Matching the device to your goal is the decision. Everything else, the wattage, the LED count, the brand name, is secondary to whether the format actually suits what you’re trying to accomplish.

Match the device to your wellness goal

Before comparing any specs, get clear on why you want a red light therapy device in the first place.

Skin rejuvenation

If your focus is fine lines, skin texture, or acne, facial devices are the right category. LED masks and handheld wands deliver targeted wavelengths directly to the face and are designed specifically for skin-level treatment. Full-body panels can cover the face, but they’re not optimised for it.

Hair and scalp care

Hair growth and scalp health require coverage across the entire scalp. Helmets and caps designed for this purpose are built to deliver consistent light to that surface area. A handheld wand used on the scalp is workable but far less efficient.

Muscle recovery

Post-workout soreness and exercise recovery benefit from larger treatment areas. If you’re dealing with general muscle fatigue after training, you need a device that can cover your back, legs, or shoulders without requiring you to hold something in place for 20 minutes.

Joint comfort

Knees, shoulders, and lower back respond well to localized treatment. Wearable wraps and flexible light pads are purpose-built for this, since they conform to the joint and allow hands-free sessions. A large panel works too, but it’s overkill for one knee.

General wellness

For daily relaxation and whole-body sessions, full-body panels or mats offer the broadest coverage and the most efficient use of session time.

Understanding the different types of red light therapy devices

Once you know your goal, the device category becomes obvious. Here’s how the main formats break down.

LED face masks cover the full face simultaneously, are hands-free, and are built specifically for skin applications including anti-aging, acne, and tone improvement.

Hair helmets and caps are designed for scalp coverage and are the only practical format for consistent, full-scalp light therapy at home.

Handheld wands are small, portable, and precise. They’re good for targeting specific facial areas or small spots on the body, though full-coverage sessions take longer.

Wearable wraps conform to body parts like knees, elbows, and shoulders. Hands-free use makes them convenient for joint-focused sessions during everyday activity.

Flexible light pads are larger than wraps and can be draped over broader areas like the lower back or thighs. Useful for muscle recovery across a wider surface.

Compact panels sit in a fixed position and work well for medium coverage, face and neck together, or upper body sessions at a set distance.

Full-body panels are the most versatile in terms of coverage and are best suited for users who want comprehensive whole-body sessions as part of a daily wellness routine.

Key features to compare before buying

Getting clear on a few technical basics protects you from being swayed by numbers that sound impressive but don’t tell the full story.

Wavelengths

Red light, typically 630 to 660 nanometers, targets skin-level tissue and is most relevant for skin rejuvenation and surface applications. Near-infrared light, sitting between 810 and 850 nanometers, penetrates deeper and is more relevant for muscle recovery and joint comfort. A device that offers both gives you more flexibility across wellness goals.

Irradiance

Irradiance measures how much light energy reaches the skin per session. Higher irradiance is not automatically better. What matters is whether the irradiance at the distance you’ll actually use the device is sufficient for a therapeutic dose in a reasonable session time. Many brands measure irradiance directly at the LED, which doesn’t reflect real-world use at 6 or 12 inches away.

Treatment area

This is the most underrated spec. A device with great irradiance but a small treatment area will require long, repetitive sessions to cover what you need. Always match coverage to your actual goal.

Ease of use

Timers, simple controls, and a portable form factor determine whether you’ll actually use the device consistently. A device that’s awkward to set up or difficult to position gets skipped. Usability drives consistency, and consistency drives results.

Build quality and warranty

Warranty length and customer support quality matter more than most buyers expect. A one-year warranty on a device you plan to use daily is a short runway. Look for brands that stand behind their products for two years or more.

Real-world examples of red light therapy device types

Looking at real-world examples can help illustrate how different device formats are designed for different purposes. The following products represent several common categories available today and are examples of device types rather than ranked recommendations.

Each of these serves a different user with a different goal. None of them is universally best.

Marketing claims worth questioning

A few phrases show up constantly in red light therapy marketing and deserve a closer look before they influence a purchase decision.

“Instant results” is the most common one. Red light therapy works through cumulative biological processes like collagen remodelling and cellular repair. These take weeks of consistent use, not one session.

“More power is always better” ignores the fact that irradiance needs to be appropriate for the tissue depth and session length. Excessive power at close range can actually reduce efficacy, a concept called biphasic dose response that’s well documented in photobiomodulation research.

“One device does everything” is rarely true in practice. A device optimised for facial skin is not the same as one optimised for deep muscle recovery, even if it technically emits both red and near-infrared light.

Misleading terminology is also common. Words like “medical-grade,” “clinical-strength,” and “FDA-approved” are frequently misused. FDA clearance for general wellness use is different from approval for treating a medical condition. Read the fine print.

When a brand makes clinical claims, look for the actual study being cited. Many referenced studies use different devices, wavelengths, or protocols than what’s being sold.

Tips for making an informed decision

Start with your wellness goal and work backward to the device category. Then compare options within that category using the features outlined above.

Read independent reviews rather than relying solely on brand websites. Third-party testing and user feedback over several months give you a much more honest picture of how a device performs in real life. Comparing multiple red light therapy device reviews can also provide a broader perspective on how different categories perform and which formats may be better suited to specific wellness goals.

Think long-term. The device you’ll use four times a week for six months is worth more than the most advanced model you use twice and forget about. Set realistic expectations and give any device at least eight to twelve weeks of consistent use before evaluating results.

The takeaway

Red light therapy devices come in many formats because different wellness goals genuinely require different approaches. A device built for facial skin rejuvenation and one built for post-workout muscle recovery are not interchangeable, regardless of what the marketing suggests.

Healthy, beautiful skin doesn’t come from using the most expensive products or following a complicated 10-step routine. More often than not, it’s the result of simple habits that you stick with every day.

From the moment you step outside, your skin faces pollution, excess oil, sweat, makeup, UV rays, and changing weather. Over time, these everyday factors can leave your skin looking dull, feeling dry, or becoming more prone to clogged pores if it isn’t cared for properly.

The good news is that you don’t need a shelf full of products to keep your skin looking its best. A consistent routine with the right essentials can go a long way toward helping your skin stay clean, balanced, and healthy.

The best skincare routine for healthy skin starts with cleansing away dirt and impurities, followed by refreshing and balancing the skin with a toner. During the day, keeping your skin hydrated and protected is just as important, while a nourishing night cream helps replenish moisture and supports your skin as it naturally repairs itself while you sleep.

Whether you’re starting a skincare routine for the first time or simplifying the one you already have, focusing on these daily essentials can help you achieve healthier-looking skin that feels comfortable, refreshed, and well cared for all year long.

Why a skincare routine matters more than expensive products

Many people assume healthier skin comes from buying luxury skincare products. In reality, consistency is usually more important than price.

Even the skincare products that claims to be the best one can’t deliver noticeable results if they’re used only occasionally. Your skin benefits most from a routine that supports its natural barrier every morning and evening.

When your routine includes proper cleansing, hydration, and overnight nourishment, your skin is better able to retain moisture, defend itself against environmental stressors, and maintain a smoother, healthier appearance.

Instead of constantly switching products, focus on building a routine you can realistically follow every day. Small daily habits often produce better long-term results than complicated routines that are difficult to maintain.

Step 1: Choose the best facial cleanser

Every effective skincare routine begins with cleansing.

Throughout the day, your skin collects oil, dirt, sweat, sunscreen, makeup, and environmental pollutants. If these impurities remain on your skin, they can contribute to clogged pores, excess shine, rough texture, and a tired-looking complexion.

A facial cleanser removes these impurities while preparing your skin for the products that follow.

The key is selecting a cleanser that matches your skin type instead of choosing the strongest formula available.

Charcoal Facial Cleanser

If your skin tends to become oily throughout the day or you frequently experience clogged pores, a charcoal cleanser can be an excellent choice.

According to NCBI studies, activated charcoal helps lift away excess oil and surface impurities while leaving the skin feeling refreshed and clean. Rather than making the skin feel overly dry, a well-formulated charcoal cleanser helps restore balance while maintaining comfort.

Many people enjoy using charcoal cleanser after exercise or during warmer months when oil production naturally increases.

Gentle Facial Cleanser

For dry, normal, or sensitive skin, a gentle facial cleanser provides effective cleansing without stripping away essential moisture.

A mild formula removes dirt, sunscreen, and everyday buildup while helping maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier. After cleansing, the skin should feel fresh and comfortable – not tight or irritated.

Gentle cleansers are also ideal for daily use because they clean effectively without causing unnecessary dryness.

Cleansing tips for healthier skin

Wash your face twice daily.

Use lukewarm water instead of hot water.

Massage cleanser gently for 30 to 60 seconds.

Avoid scrubbing aggressively.

Pat your face dry using a clean towel.

Cleanse after exercising to remove sweat and oil.

Clean skin provides the ideal foundation for every other skincare product in your routine.

Step 2: Use the best facial toner

For years, toner was considered an optional skincare step. Today, modern facial toners have become an important part of many healthy skincare routines because they do much more than simply remove leftover residue.

A good toner helps refresh the skin after cleansing while providing lightweight hydration and preparing the skin for serums and moisturisers.

Applying toner immediately after washing your face can leave your skin feeling smoother, more balanced, and ready to absorb the next products more effectively.

Pore Refining Toner

If your skin becomes oily during the day or your pores appear more visible, a pore-refining toner can be a useful addition to your routine.

These formulas help remove any remaining traces of oil or impurities after cleansing while giving the skin a cleaner, smoother appearance.

Many users also appreciate the refreshed feeling that a pore-refining toner provides, particularly during hot or humid weather.

Gentle Balancing Facial Toner

Those with dry or sensitive skin often prefer a balancing toner that focuses on hydration instead of aggressive oil removal. A gentle toner helps restore comfort after cleansing while supporting healthy moisture levels, leaving the skin soft instead of tight.

Because these formulas are lightweight, they layer easily beneath moisturisers and sunscreen without feeling heavy.

Benefits of using toner daily

Using toner consistently can provide several everyday skincare benefits:

Refreshes the skin after cleansing.

Helps balance the skin’s surface.

Removes any remaining residue.

Provides lightweight hydration.

Helps prepare skin for moisturisers.

Leaves the complexion feeling smoother and more comfortable.

Rather than being an unnecessary extra step, toner acts as the bridge between cleansing and moisturising.

Step 3: Hydrate and protect your skin during the day

Hydration is one of the most overlooked parts of a healthy skincare routine. Many people with oily skin believe they should avoid moisturisers altogether. Along with using the right moisturiser, learning about the body benefits of lemon water may also encourage healthy hydration habits that support overall wellness.

In reality, dehydrated skin may actually produce more oil as it attempts to compensate for moisture loss. Using a lightweight daytime moisturiser helps maintain hydration without leaving the skin feeling greasy.

Well-hydrated skin generally appears:

Softer

Smoother

Brighter

More resilient

Daily hydration also supports the skin’s natural barrier, helping protect it against environmental stressors throughout the day.

No morning routine is complete without sunscreen.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against UV rays that contribute to premature skin aging, uneven skin tone, and dark spots. Applying sunscreen every morning – even on cloudy days – is one of the most effective long-term habits for maintaining healthy-looking skin.

Step 4: Repair your skin with the best night cream

While you sleep, your skin naturally shifts into repair mode. This overnight recovery period makes nighttime the perfect opportunity to replenish lost moisture and support the skin barrier with a nourishing night cream.

Unlike lightweight daytime moisturisers, night creams are designed to provide longer-lasting hydration while you rest.

Tallow Night Repair Cream

Tallow-based skincare has become increasingly popular because it provides rich nourishment while supporting the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
Provides deep overnight hydration.

Supports the skin barrier.

Helps reduce morning dryness.

Making night cream part of your evening routine is one of the simplest ways to wake up with healthier-looking skin.

Morning vs. night skincare routine

Although many skincare products can be used both morning and evening, your routine should have slightly different goals depending on the time of day.

Morning Routine

Cleanse your face.

Apply facial toner.

Use a lightweight moisturiser.

Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Evening Routine

Remove makeup and cleanse thoroughly.

Apply toner.

Finish with a nourishing night cream.

Following these simple routines consistently often delivers better results than complicated multi-step regimens.

Best skincare routine based on your skin type

Every skin type has different needs.

Oily Skin – Choose a charcoal facial cleanser, pore-refining toner, lightweight moisturiser, sunscreen, and a nourishing night cream.

Dry Skin – Use a gentle facial cleanser, balancing toner, hydrating moisturiser, sunscreen, and a richer night cream to replenish moisture.

Combination Skin – Balance your routine by using products that cleanse oily areas while maintaining hydration across drier parts of the face.

Sensitive Skin – Stick with gentle, fragrance-conscious products and introduce new skincare one product at a time.

Healthy lifestyle habits that support great skin

Skincare products perform best when paired with healthy daily habits.

Simple lifestyle choices can have a noticeable impact on your skin over time.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.

Sleep seven to nine hours each night.

Exercise regularly to support healthy circulation.

Manage stress through relaxation or mindfulness.

Avoid smoking and limit excessive alcohol consumption.

Healthy skin reflects both consistent skincare and overall wellness.

Common skincare mistakes to avoid

Even excellent skincare products may not deliver their full benefits if common mistakes become daily habits.

Avoid these mistakes:

Overwashing your face.

Using harsh cleansers.

Skipping moisturizer because your skin feels oily.

Forgetting sunscreen.

Sleeping with makeup on.

Constantly changing products.

Over-exfoliating.

Expecting overnight results.

Patience and consistency are key. Most skincare routines require several weeks before noticeable improvements begin to appear.

The takeaway

The best skincare routine for healthy skin doesn’t need to be complicated. A consistent routine built around cleansing, toning, daily hydration, sun protection, and overnight nourishment can help your skin stay clean, balanced, and comfortable throughout the year.

Choosing products that match your skin type is equally important. Whether you prefer a charcoal cleanser for excess oil, a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin, a balancing toner, or a nourishing night cream, using them consistently gives your skin the support it needs every day.

Remember, healthy skin is the result of daily care rather than occasional treatments. By following a simple routine and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, you can enjoy smoother, more hydrated, and healthier-looking skin for years to come.

Anti-ageing is fast becoming one of my least favourite terms. The older I get, the more resentful I feel towards it. Because, yes, I am ageing (aren’t we all?). But I am not anti it. In fact, it is a privilege to get older (I’ve seen far too many examples of life being too short recently) so the suggestion that anyone over the age of around 40 should feel ashamed of a few extra lines on their face is vexing to me.

This is why Studio 10 and I can be friends. Because any brand that describes itself as ‘pro age’ and their consumers as ‘ageFULL’ gets my vote. What a message!

But the proof is of course in the actual products which is why I was keen to test out one of their best sellers – the Studio 10 Skin Repair Perfect Canvas Treatment Foundation SPF 30 (£34 from Studio 10 UK). A huge foundation fan myself (I rarely leave the house without it), I wanted to see if this product would provide enough coverage for my 43-year-old skin, without looking cakey.

My naturally oily skin isn’t totally covered in lines or blemishes, but it certainly isn’t as clear or as smooth as it used to be, so I need that little bit of extra coverage now, as well as grease-free hydration. I had heard that this was the product to achieve it, so I decided to see for myself.

A medium to full coverage foundation usually ends in disaster in my experience – either it winds up being too greasy or it sits in my lines. But I was hopeful with this because it is a cream formula – not liquid – and something feels so right about this brand. It just seems to ‘get’ 40+ skin. But would I be disappointed? Here’s my honest review.

The product details

The compact provides medium to full coverage and has been designed for mature skin. It contains soft focus technology to help blur fine lines and promises to hydrate and smooth the skin for a healthy, radiant finish with the help of hyaluronic acid and nourishing ingredients like shea butter and cotton seed oil. It is also enriched with firming and antioxidant skincare actives like vitamin E and tocopheryl acetate.

It claims to cover pigmentation, redness and dark circles without the need for concealer and each compact includes two shades so that you can colour-match your own skin tone all year round (genius). It comes in four shade variations and is vegan as well as paraben and cruelty-free.

How I tested it

I applied this with a blending brush directly from the palette onto clean skin, after using my daily serum and SPF moisturiser.

First impressions

I noticed my two shades (in the Medium compact) are very different to each other so at first I was confused over which one to go for and how to use it. I soon realised that you are meant to mix the two together to achieve your own tailored shade – clever – so I did a bit of experimenting on my hand and finally found a shade that seemed to blend nicely with my natural skin tone.

I’ll be honest – this took a bit of practise. You’re not going to find exactly the right shade from the off and it did feel like a bit of a waste of product as I dipped into each shade to try and blend a matching one together. It basically took a lot of guess work and I’m still not really sure how I found my shade, but I did.

Whilst applying it onto my skin, I noticed it was providing great coverage. I knew straight away that I wouldn’t need any concealer – usually my tinted base requires a little extra coverage around my nose and on any blemishes but this seemed to cover it all.

It wasn’t quite as glowy as I had hoped – I know I have oily skin but I still like to look semi-radiant. However, it wasn’t exactly matte either and I could tell that with a bit of highlighter its lack of radiance wouldn’t be a huge problem. It blended onto my skin just fine – I wouldn’t say it seamlessly melted – but it was easy to do and once I had applied it all over, my skin looked satisfyingly even.

Full disclosure – I applied way too much on my first go and realised that the formula is much thicker than it looks. The end result looked extremely heavy and mask-like after my first application which is not what I want to achieve from my foundation. Once I had realised my mistake though, my second try was much more successful.

My results

Once I had nailed the amount I needed to use, I was really pleased with the results. Ok the formula isn’t overly glowy but what I noticed more than anything is that it really does last on the skin all day. This, coming from an oily skinned girl is pretty exciting! I didn’t need to touch it up at all, plus it covers up a spider angioma on my nose that no other concealers can hide.

Honestly? On me, it can look a little dry in some areas and greasy in others – I know, confusing. For example, I did notice the skin just above my top lip looked ever so slightly mottled after a few hours of wearing the foundation (this is where facial hair is naturally thicker) but this was nothing I couldn’t fix with a quick dab of a brush and a hydrating facial spritz.

My chin tends to get quite greasy, whatever foundation I am wearing, but it wasn’t so bad with this product that I wanted to swear off ever using it again (trust me, I have done that with others) and I’ll take one greasy chin over a greasy forehead, t-zone, nose and chin any day.

Finding my shade continued to be trial and error but I now seem to have a system of tapping my brush twice into the dark shade then three times into the light shade to get the shade I want for my skin. I absolutely love the concept of having two shades of foundation under one roof and think it’s a genius idea for those who don’t want to have to find a new product or shade for different seasons.

The fact that you don’t need to apply much is great news too as it means it won’t run out quickly and I have found that I can just apply it where I need it, a bit like a concealer – but only a bit. It doesn’t sit in my lines either (and there are a few of them now so I would definitely notice) but I think this is simply because I don’t over apply. It’s worth remembering that a little goes a long way.

What other users are saying

Overall, users seem to absolutely love this product. Katy W says, “this lives up to its promise! Over 50 skin-friendly and buildable. Super-natural looking and long-lasting. I also love that it’s not a liquid. So much more practical.”

Bev T writes, “So glad this foundation was recommended to me. It gives great coverage, blends easily, and is so light that it feels I have nothing on my skin.” Another user, Janet V, says that she has been converted from Estee Lauder Double Wear, which is also targeted to mature skin. “Love this foundation, my makeup looks fresh and dewy and doesn’t sit into fine lines,” she says. “Only need to apply a small amount for coverage. I’ve been a Double Wear user for years but not I’m a convert.”

Vanessa E agrees with me about not needing much. “This product blew my mind. It’s light, you hardly need any and gives you flawless full coverage without any clogging.”

There are unfortunately a few comments about it sitting in users’ lines and pores. “Sadly it’s not for me, I have combination skin and it seemed to suck it up and just sit in my pores as soon as I applied it. It felt greasy and tacky on my skin,” writes Harriet A.

Victoria F says, “It sat in my pores and didn’t look very nice on,” while Anita wrote, “settled in my wrinkles.” My comments here would be to apply less – the first time I used it I noticed it settling in my crow’s feet but once I realised I needed far less, I didn’t experience this. Lesley also wasn’t impressed and wrote, “unfortunately this foundation wasn’t for me, found it greasy, didn’t last on my skin and looked cakey. I wouldn’t purchase again.”

Some like how easy it is to apply. “When applying it goes on very smoothly, it’s very easy to blend out & move around using one full swipe of the brush on the foundation for each side of the face,” says Blondie63, while others are impressed by the longevity. “It knocks back redness without looking flat but the staying power is the real game changer for me,” says Janie41. “The maximum wear time I have tried was 12 hours – I have nothing else that would possibly last that long and still look fresh and natural. I would recommend trying it.”

Overall value for money

What I think is really different about this foundation is that you get two shades to play around with all year round. So, there is no need to buy one foundation for summer and one for winter – you can literally tailor make your own shade and stick to the same product. This for me is a huge gamechanger when it comes to overall value for money because you don’t have to keep chopping and changing with the seasons and spend money on two foundations.

£34 is a lot to spend on a foundation for some – I know that e.l.f, Revlon and Max Factor do excellent foundations for a lot less money than this – but I feel the end result is impressive enough to spend that much on it. Particularly if you have mature skin and you’re struggling to find something that works for your changing complexion.

Plus, it’s around the same price as some of my other all-time favourite bases, Bareminerals Complexion Rescue and Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation, so I personally would be spending around the same amount anyway. It gives a lot more coverage than the Bareminerals one too. Also, the fact that you don’t need to use much is a big win too and means you won’t run out quickly.

The takeaway

At the time of review, it was summer in the UK so a full coverage foundation isn’t at the top of my priority list. However, I can definitely see myself using this daily during the winter when my skin isn’t so veiled by a tan. As long as I don’t overdo it, it makes my skin look naturally even and the fact that it is thick enough to cover my blemishes without needing a concealer is a big plus for me.

At the very least, it will be used as my on-the-go touch up foundation. It is a compact after all so very easy to carry around, plus it has a mirror. The only thing missing is a sponge inside for application, however one of my Real Techniques travel brushes will do just fine.

Overall, I think this foundation has everything mature skin needs. Great coverage, longevity, ease of use, portability and a clever shade matching solution, plus it won’t break the bank if around the £30 mark is what you usually spend on your base. I am officially impressed! Plus any brand that doesn’t make me feel ashamed of my age is a big win for me.

Most mornings I’m doing my makeup in about five minutes flat (usually with a child talking to me at the same time), so I’ve got into a bit of a rut of just throwing on the same few things. It does the job, but I don’t look particularly polished — just… less tired. If you had to strip it right back to the essentials, what would you actually focus on to look put together quickly without it turning into a full routine?

Rubys says:

A five-minute face is not about speed, it is about being prepared. Have everything ready. Skincare done, products within reach. That alone makes a difference.

You do not need foundation. Use concealer strategically, targeting darkness and redness. Blend with fingers for speed and a seamless finish.

Bring warmth back into the face with a multipurpose product. Something like RMS Lip2Cheek or my Cheek Colour will add life instantly to both cheeks and lips.

Brows are essential. Brush them up and fix with a gel to create structure. For the eyes, keep it simple… curl lashes and apply mascara. That alone makes you look awake and considered.

Cream textures are your ally. They blend quickly, are more forgiving, and sit beautifully on the skin. Choose buildable formulas so you can apply without overthinking.

If you do the right things, you do not need to do many things.

Glowing skin doesn’t come from a 15-step routine.

It starts in the shower. That’s where sweat, oil, sunscreen, dirt, and dead skin finally leave your body.

But there’s a catch. A shower can also dry your skin out if the water is too hot, the products are harsh, or you stay in there long enough to hold a full concert.

So, what should you do? It’s simple. Use the right toiletries that are gentle and nourishing. Clean your skin without damaging its natural barrier. And ensure you follow the shower routine properly. That’ll work to give your skin a natural glow.

Grab fizzing shower bombs for glowing skin!

7 steps to a shower routine for glowing skin

Step 1: Set warm water

Start your shower with lukewarm water.

The best temperature is between 96 and 106°F. It feels comfortable. More importantly, your skin likes it.

Very hot water removes the natural oils that keep your skin soft. It can increase water loss and skin pH. That often leads to dryness, redness, tightness, and itching.

Cold water isn’t perfect either. Extremely cold temperatures can also increase water loss and make the skin less comfortable.

Warm water sits right in the middle. It cleans away sweat, sunscreen, and dirt without being too harsh.

Keep your shower under 10 minutes if possible. For people with very dry or sensitive skin, 5 to 7 minutes often works even better.

If you enjoy ending with cooler water, keep it short. Around 20 to 30 seconds is enough.

Step 2: Wash your hair

Clean your scalp early in the shower.

Hair products, oil, sweat, and dirt sit on the scalp all day. Shampoo removes that buildup.

Use a gentle shampoo, like Naples Soap Moroccan Oil Shampoo Bar. Work up a good lather. Massage it gently into your scalp. Focus on the roots.

Then apply the Naples Soap Moroccan Oil Conditioner Bar to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Leave the product in for 3 minutes. This gives the conditioner time to work and soften the hair.

Both bars use argan oil and cocoa butter. They help nourish each strand properly.

Why wash your hair first? It’s because this prevents hair products from running down into clean skin. Shampoo and conditioner residue can clog pores and cause breakouts.

Step 3: Cleanse your face

Your face handles a lot of things every day.

Sunscreen, sweat, oil, pollution, and dirt. A gentle cleanser removes these impurities without harming your skin.

Choose a mild one, based on your skin type. For instance:

Both the bars carry nourishing benefits and ensure glowing skin with different approaches. The Sensitive Skin Soap works by strengthening your skin barrier. The Vitamin C bar works by boosting radiance with antioxidants.

Wet your face with warm water. Rub the soap and create a soft lather. Gently massage it with your fingertips. This removes all the impurities, including leftover shampoo or conditioner.

Avoid harsh soaps and hard scrubbing. They can damage your skin barrier, leading to dryness and irritation.

Gentle cleansers ensure a healthy skin barrier that holds moisture better. It helps your skin look smooth and naturally glowing.

Step 4: Wash Your Body

Now it’s time to wash the rest of your body.

Choose your soap based on your skin’s needs. If your skin looks dull or uneven, use Naples Soap Company Florida Sunshine & Vitamin C Natural Soap. It has:

Vitamin C to brighten the skin.

Coconut and olive oils to nourish.

Shea butter to soften.

For sensitive skin, use Naples Soap Company Sensitive Skin Soap instead. It’s fragrance-free and has no harsh ingredients.

Gentle soaps can also help skin glow. Natural ingredients add helpful nutrients that keep skin soft and hydrated. And healthy skin naturally looks brighter.

Start washing the areas that collect the most sweat first-

Underarms

Groin

Feet

Chest

Back

Then wash the rest of your body. Your arms and legs only need a little water and soap to get clean.

This method helps remove sweat, oil, and bacteria more effectively.

Step 5: Exfoliate weekly

Exfoliation is the key to glowing skin.

Dead skin can build up over time and make skin feel rough or look dull. Gentle scrubbing can help lift dead skin cells and reveal fresh skin underneath.

To get the job done, have the right product.

Use Naples Soap Company Vitamin C Orange Blossom & Vanilla Sugar Scrub. The fine sugar gently buffs away dead skin cells without harming your skin. Meanwhile, coconut and sunflower oils keep your skin soft. This combination leaves it smooth and glowing.

Focus on rough areas.

Elbows

Knees

Heels

They have fewer oil glands, so they need more attention.

Use gentle circular motions. Don’t scrub hard. Also, limit exfoliation to 1-2 times a week. If your skin turns bright red and starts questioning your life choices, you exfoliated too hard.

Step 6: Enjoy weekly bath soaks

A relaxing bath can be part of your glow routine, too.

Look for a gentle bath bomb and let it do the work. You can use Naples Soap Company Bath Bombs. These bath bombs carry-

Cocoa butter

Shea butter

Epsom salt

The butters help deeply moisturize dry skin, soften rough areas, and support the skin barrier. And Epsom salt helps create a soothing experience.

Using the bath bomb is easy.

Just fill the tub with warm water, drop in the bomb, and soak for about 15 to 20 minutes. That’s it.

Try a bath soak 1 to 3 times per week. It’s a great way to give your skin extra care. And this care should result in glowing skin.

Step 7: Rinse and finish

Now rinse everything completely.

Rinse away-

Soap

Sugar scrub

Shampoo

Conditioner

Leftover products can leave residue on the skin. In some people, that residue may contribute to clogged pores or body breakouts.

Take a few extra seconds to rinse your back, shoulders, and hairline well.

If you enjoy cool water, finish with a brief cool rinse for under 30 seconds. Keep it short.

A quick cool rinse can feel refreshing and may temporarily reduce redness by narrowing blood vessels. It also wakes you up faster than your alarm sometimes does.

Post-Shower Step: Moisturise immediately

This step has a timer.

Pat your skin dry with a towel. Don’t rub aggressively. Then apply moisturiser within 3 to 5 minutes.

Your skin still holds some water after a shower. Applying moisturiser quickly helps trap that water inside the skin.

Look for ingredients such as-

Glycerin

Aloe vera

Shea butter

Cocoa butter

Coconut oil

Argan oil

Jojoba oil

These attract moisture, hold onto it, and help support the skin barrier. The more hydrated the skin is, the more glowing it looks.

Apply Naples Soap Company Fragrance-Free Face Cream to your face and Luxe Body Butter to your body. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, and heels. It’s because those areas have fewer oil glands and dry out faster.

FAQs

Which shower is best for glowing skin?

A warm shower with gentle products works best. Keep it under 10 minutes. Use a mild soap, exfoliate weekly, and always moistursze within 5 minutes after drying off.

How to get glowing skin after a shower?

Pat dry and apply a natural moisturiser rich in nutrients within 3-5 minutes while skin is still damp. This locks in hydration, which boosts softness and adds a glow. Use products with glycerin, shea butter, or ceramides for best results.

Do cold showers make your skin glow?

Not really. Cold water tightens blood vessels and can increase water loss. A quick 20-30 second cool rinse at the end is fine, but warm water is better for everyday showers.

How often should you shower?

Once daily works for most adults. If you have dry or sensitive skin, shower every 2-3 days. Active people may need daily showers, especially after workouts.

SPONSORED

Psychiatric care works best when the clinician fits a person’s symptoms, medical history, budget, and communication style. A poor match can slow diagnosis, complicate treatment, and weaken follow-through. That is why choosing a psychiatrist deserves the same careful review as any other major health decision. A few practical steps can help narrow the options before the first appointment.

Clear selection criteria help patients, relatives, and referring clinicians sort options with less stress. Being able to find a psychiatrist whose background matches those priorities saves time and effort. With a steady approach, people can compare qualifications, ask sharper questions, and choose care that supports symptom relief, daily function, and long-term stability. The sections below walk through each part of that process.

Define needs

A useful starting point is naming the main concern, such as panic attacks, depressed mood, insomnia, trauma symptoms, or attention problems. That first step narrows the list before calls begin. Many people find a psychiatrist more effectively after matching those concerns with a clinician’s stated focus, visit format, office location, and insurance participation. Better alignment early often leads to smoother intake and clearer treatment goals.

Check credentials

State licensure confirms legal authority to practice medicine and prescribe treatment. Board certification adds another helpful marker, though it does not guarantee skill or rapport. Training history, hospital affiliations, and years in practice also deserve review. Medical board records may show license status, disciplinary action, and current standing. Those details give families firmer ground than a polished profile or a brief office description.

Match the care style

Psychiatrists do not all work the same way. Some focus on medication review and symptom monitoring, while others include psychotherapy during visits. Certain clinicians work closely with therapists, primary care doctors, or neurologists when symptoms overlap. That distinction matters. A person seeking careful medication adjustment may prefer structured follow-up, while someone needing longer discussion may want a psychiatrist who allows more time for emotional history.

Review access basics

Access often shapes outcomes more than reputation alone. Travel time, parking, public transit, evening hours, and telehealth availability can determine whether treatment remains consistent. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, steady access to mental health services plays a key role in effective treatment. Wait times also matter, especially during periods of worsening symptoms. Another practical issue is message handling between appointments. If refill questions or side effects sit unanswered for days, care may feel unstable before medication has time to work.

Understand costs

Fees should be clear before the first appointment is booked. Patients benefit from asking about intake charges, follow-up rates, cancellation policies, and costs tied to forms or refill requests. Insurance participation also needs direct confirmation from both the office and the health plan. Directory listings can lag behind contract changes. A short verification call may prevent surprise bills and protect a household budget.

Ask focused questions

Well-chosen questions reveal fit faster than general conversation. Patients can ask how the psychiatrist approaches diagnosis, medication trials, sleep disturbance, and care during a crisis. Another useful question covers coordination with therapists or family physicians. Listening style matters as much as content. If responses feel dismissive, rushed, or vague, that signal deserves weight before a treatment relationship begins.

Look for communication fit

Communication style affects trust, and trust often affects adherence. Some people respond well to direct, clinical explanations. Others do better with a warmer tone and more time for questions. During the first exchange, families can note whether the psychiatrist listens without interruption, explains benefits and risks plainly, and invites discussion. Respect shown early often predicts how future visits will feel.

Use reviews carefully

Online reviews can add context, though they should never carry the full decision. A harsh comment may reflect billing confusion, front desk delays, or scheduling issues rather than clinical judgment. Patterns matter more than isolated complaints. Repeated notes about listening, punctuality, explanation quality, or follow-up can be useful. Balanced reading keeps expectations realistic and limits snap conclusions drawn from emotional posts.

Prepare for the first visit

Preparation can improve the first appointment substantially. Patients should bring a current medication list, prior diagnoses, allergy history, sleep patterns, and any recent symptom changes. Family psychiatric history may also help, if available. Written goals can keep the visit focused when anxiety rises. Afterward, people can ask whether they felt heard, understood the plan, and knew the next step.

The takeaway

Choosing a psychiatrist becomes more manageable when people review fit, credentials, access, cost, and communication in a clear order. Small checks made early can prevent delays, billing strain, and poor therapeutic alignment. A thoughtful process gives patients and families a better chance of finding care they can continue with confidence. When questions are asked openly and practical details are confirmed, treatment can start on stronger clinical footing.

If there’s one beauty treatment I dread come swimwear season, it’s doing my bikini line.

It’s always been my biggest hair removal frustration. Shaving leaves me battling razor rash, waxing is hardly something to look forward to, and while at-home devices promise a longer-term solution, they can be ever so slightly intimidating and they only work if you’re disciplined enough to keep using them.

Which is exactly where I fell down when I previously tried IPL…The results were genuinely impressive, but like most at-home hair removal devices, it only works if you’re prepared to stick with it; and I wasn’t. Once I’d stopped doing the maintenance sessions, the hair gradually came back and I found myself reaching for my razor or wax all over again.

So when ViQure asked whether I’d like to try its S-LD Hair Removal Device (currently $699 from ViQure US), I wasn’t expecting a miracle after one session. What I was hoping for was something that felt user-friendly enough that I’d actually want to keep using it. After all, even the most effective hair removal device is fairly pointless if it spends the next six months gathering dust in the back of a cupboard.

I decided to start with the two areas I’d always found most awkward to treat; my bikini line and underarms. I’d always found IPL slightly fiddly on smaller, more sensitive areas, so they seemed the perfect place to find out whether SLD really offered a different experience.

I only needed one treatment to realise I’d gone into it with completely the wrong expectations.

What is SLD hair removal?

Before getting into my experience though, it’s worth a quick explanation of what SLD actually is.

Like IPL, SLD (Super-Light Diode) technology uses light to target the hair follicle and reduce future growth. The difference, according to ViQure, is that SLD uses a more concentrated beam of light than traditional IPL, allowing more energy to reach the follicle itself rather than dispersing into the surrounding skin. The result is a treatment that’s gentler on the skin while still effectively disrupting hair growth.

There’s another practical difference too. While IPL treatments are often recommended two or three times a week to begin with, ViQure says its S-LD hair removal device only needs using every 20 to 30 days during the initial treatment phase before moving onto maintenance sessions. As someone whose biggest obstacle has always been remembering to keep up with treatments, that immediately appealed.

Of course, fewer sessions only matter if the results are there to back them up – but from a convenience point of view at least, it certainly sounded promising.

Finally, everything I’d read before trying the device told me that SLD was actually significantly less intimidating than IPL; almost no pain, noise, or dazzling lights (anyone who’s tried IPL will know just how bright it can be).

It can be used on the face and body, including the legs, underarms and bikini area, and has both Manual Mode for individual pulses and Continuous Mode for gliding the device across larger sections of skin.

The treatment head also features built-in cooling, which is designed to keep the skin comfortable while the S-LD hair removal is firing. An LCD screen displays the selected intensity, cooling status and pulse count, while the device must be held flat against the skin before it will release each pulse.

According to ViQure, a full initial course consists of four to six treatments spaced around 20 to 30 days apart, followed by occasional maintenance sessions.

The treatment guide also covers a broader range of skin tones than many IPL devices. According to ViQure’s manual, the device can be used on Fitzpatrick skin types I to V, with only the very deepest skin tone (type VI) excluded. That’s still not completely inclusive – as is often the case with at-home IPL and laser devices – but it does make it suitable for a wider range of users than many comparable devices.

How I tested ViQure’s S-LD

Before getting started, I shaved my bikini line and underarms 24 hours before my first treatment, as instructed in the user manual. I chose level three intensity (the lowest recommended setting for my skin tone), switched on the built-in cooling function and decided to begin with my bikini line before moving onto my underarms.

Following ViQure’s guidance, I wore the supplied protective glasses at all times and used a standard bodycare gel to help the device glide more smoothly over my skin.

For this initial review, I’m focusing solely on my first treatment experience, including how easy the device was to set up, how comfortable it felt to use and my immediate observations afterwards. I’ll continue updating the article over the coming months as I complete the full course of treatments and begin to assess the longer-term hair reduction.

First impressions

Beauty gadgets aren’t usually known for their packaging, but my first impressions here were that the ViQure feels genuinely luxurious. Its box opens almost like a jewellery case, with the device, protective glasses and accessories all sitting in their own velvet-lined compartments. Lift out the main tray and there’s even a ribbon-pull drawer underneath housing the cables… Frankly, Tiffany might want to take notes here.

The protective glasses also deserve a quick mention. Rather than the oversized plastic goggles I’d been expecting, they’re surprisingly stylish (think black Wayfarers), and, had they not been foldable, I actually might have been tempted to wear them out.

Image – Courtesy of writer

Finally, the device itself is a slick, black affair with a handle and domed, vented head (that does have a somewhat Predator look to it – you’ll see what I mean in the photos).

After taking stock of everything in the box, I sat down with the user manual before attempting to set anything up.

Now, anyone who’s read my tech reviews will know just how much I dread the setup process with new gadgets, so you’ll imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to discover that the manual is just 10 pages long, with *enormous* font, clear photographs and straightforward instructions. Within a couple of minutes I knew exactly what I was doing.

Following the numbered steps, I plugged in the power cable, attached the adapter and connected the device. I then held down the power button to fire it up before using the LCD display to switch on the cooling function and select my chosen intensity level.

By this point I could already tell the device was weighty enough that I’d probably want to rest my elbows on something during treatment, but I was also genuinely relieved by how painless the setup had been. Considering that’s usually my least favourite part of trying any new beauty tech, I took it as a good sign.

My first treatment

With everything set up, it was finally time to tackle my bikini line. If there was one area where I expected S-LD to hurt, this was it. My previous experience of at-home hair removal had always been a little disconcerting, involving a staggeringly bright flash, the faint smell of singed hair and the odd little ‘zap’ sound.

Instead, within a couple of minutes I found myself glancing at the pulse counter on the LCD display because I genuinely wasn’t convinced the device was firing (it was).

The difference, I quickly realised, was that I simply wasn’t getting the sensory cues I’d become used to. The combination of using a generic bodycare gel (to help the device glide) and the device’s cooling plate creates a sensation that’s probably closest to using a chilled gua sha. It’s cool enough that you’re constantly aware of it, but never cold or uncomfortable; in fact, I found it surprisingly relaxing.

That isn’t to say I felt absolutely nothing. On my bikini area I did notice two spots that stung a little – but I mainly put that down to post-shave irritation from the treatment prep, rather than the device itself.

Under my arms too, there was one tiny jolt on a particularly sensitive spot under my right arm, but it happened only once during the entire treatment and certainly wasn’t enough to make me wince.

Compared with IPL though, the flashes themselves are dramatically less bright. I still wore the protective glasses throughout (and I’d always recommend doing the same), but I never once felt the need to close my eyes between pulses.

Treating my bikini area took me around nine minutes and by the end of the session the pulse counter had reached 823. My underarms took eight minutes each, racking up a further 1258 pulses on the counter.

Image – Courtesy of writer

The device is heavier than I’d anticipated – roughly the weight of a standard hairdryer – so I found it much easier to rest my elbows on cushions while I worked. Once I’d found the right angle to keep the treatment head flat against my skin though, using it was ridiculously easy.

Afterwards, I checked my bikini area expecting at least a little redness. There was none, and ditto no irritation, no lingering soreness and no heat in the treated area; my skin simply looked and felt normal. I then checked my underarms too and was pleasantly surprised to find that they too had come out unscathed.

It’s obviously far too early to comment on whether the treatment will permanently reduce my hair growth. But after just one session, I can honestly say I’d gone into S-LD hair removal with completely the wrong expectations – in reality, it was both completely painless and also easy.

What other users are saying

I’m not the only one who’s been impressed. While the ViQure S-LD is still relatively new, there are already some detailed reviews from early adopters on Reddit.

Another Redditor, u/Aggravating_Rise_15, was equally enthusiastic after switching from IPL: “After only two months of inconsistent use, this is one of the best hair removal devices on the market. It produces actual results, quickly, with a fraction of the pain that both IPL and in-clinic laser treatments have.”

Meanwhile, u/EngineerNo2254 (who shared their first impressions after years of using IPL) praised the comfort of the treatment, saying: “The cooling is honestly incredible… it’s enough to completely mask the pain from the S-LD treatment.”

Continuing with his review, u/Aggravating_Rise_15, who had previously been disappointed with an IPL device, said: “ I am extremely satisfied with this device and I will never go back to IPL.”

That said, a few users have also pointed out that the marketing and instruction manual could be clearer, while others noted that, like any at-home hair removal device, consistent treatments are key if you want to see the best long-term results.

Overall value for money

With an RRP of $699, the ViQure SL-D certainly isn’t an impulse purchase. In fact, it’s one of the more expensive at-home hair removal devices on the market, so it’s fair to expect a premium experience.

On that front, I don’t think it disappoints. From the luxurious packaging and intuitive setup to the comfortable treatment itself, everything about the device feels thoughtfully designed. If, like me, you’ve avoided using IPL on your bikini line because it’s felt uncomfortable, intimidating or just too much hassle to keep up with, the combination of monthly treatments and the cooling technology could make it far easier to stick with.

Of course, whether it’s ultimately worth the investment will depend on one thing: the results. At the time of writing I’ve only completed my first session, so I can’t honestly tell you whether it will deliver the long-term hair reduction ViQure promises. I’ll continue updating this review as I work through the full course of treatments.

What I can say is that, if the results do live up to my first impressions, I wouldn’t hesitate to say the higher price is justified. After one session alone, it’s already the most pleasant at-home hair removal experience I’ve had.

The takeaway

I went into this review expecting to compare ViQure with the IPL devices I’d used before but I came away questioning whether I’d ever want to use IPL again.

Of course, I’m only one treatment in, so it would be irresponsible to make any bold claims about long-term hair reduction at this stage. That’s exactly why I’ll continue updating this review as I complete the full course.

What I can say with confidence, though, is that ViQure has already solved the biggest barrier I’ve always had with at-home hair removal: I actually want to use it again. The treatment – particularly on my bikini line, which I’d expected to be the most uncomfortable area of all – was completely painless and far more user-friendly than I’d imagined, to the point where it felt more like using a cooling skincare tool than a S-LD hair removal device.

If the results over the coming months prove to be as impressive as the treatment experience itself, I suspect ViQure could become the device that finally persuades me to retire my razor for good. Until then, consider this an extremely promising first impression rather than a final verdict.
