Is This Product the Secret to the Glossy Eye Look?

As a fan of a glossy look pretty much anywhere I can get it, I’ve been trying out 19/99’s Beauty High-Shine Gloss – a dewy balm for eyelids.

Worn alone or over eyeshadow, and ideal for glowy summer looks, in the heat this product has a pretty thick, glossy consistency when applied.

This means it isn’t sticky and I don’t need a lot of product. But also means the look it achieves is fairly short-lived.

I’m also not sure I would describe the result as a gloss – more of a slight dewiness – which could work well as part of a summertime no-makeup or yoga skin look but is firmly on the subtle end of the spectrum.

For those looking for a full-blown wet look though, it might be worth checking out the alternatives from Kevyn Aucoin or Nars.

In terms of staying power, while this gloss keeps its dewiness for an hour or two after application, even using a setting spray this needs to be reapplied regularly.

This is new, up-to-date information. We updated this article in April 2024 to add our further thoughts on this product, complete with updated prices.

About 19/99 High-Shine Gloss

Inspired by their mothers’ use of Vaseline, founders Camille and Stephanie applied Vaseline to their lips and lids before they had their own makeup bags.

Their modern interpretation is this non-sticky formula with satisfying glide and lasting cushion for comfortable wear. Formulated with a gel texture, High-Shine Gloss can be worn alone for a dewy effect, or on top of makeup for added luminosity.

On the skin

This feels really nice on the skin, and the lightweight, gel-cushion formula is completely clear with super fine flecks of mica to add shine to lips, cheekbones, eyelids, collarbones, or anywhere else that you want to add some glow!

It’s also hydrating, and you can definitely feel this on the skin, containing ceramides and sodium hyaluronate (a type of hyaluronic acid) for a moisturising and plumping effect.

This is great for all skin types and leaves a slightly pearly radiance, designed to leave a glow on the skin. Simply dab it on any areas you want to highlight or blend in with an eye pencil for added shine and diffused colour!

What other people have to say

Customers on the 19/99 website really like this gloss, with one saying “A very simple clear gloss that I’ve worn on my lips and as highlighter on my face. It looks great and I forget it’s even there.”

Another writes “This non-sticky gloss turns a subtle eye into a bright and vibrant nighttime look”, while others love its versatility “I really like this product – love anything multipurpose and this works so well. Pair with your set of pencils and you are golden.”

The takeaway

Overall I’m loving the subtle, healthy glow this offers for a no-makeup look, and this tube’s tiny size means it would fit into pretty much any bag for reapplication on the go.

This really isn’t hugely long-lasting, which can also affect the staying power of any eye shadow/pencil this is used over, however, it lasts much longer than something like Vaseline and feels nicer on the skin.

Great for: A dewy eye look.

Not-so-great for: Those wanting a gloss with really long-lasting results.

19/99’s High-Shine Gloss is £18.00 on the Cult Beauty UK website/$24.00 on the 19/99 website
