Reviewing YSL's Eye Gloss Smudger

A Glossy Eye Favourite?

As a fan of a glossy look pretty much anywhere I can get it, I’ve been trying out YSL’s Eye Gloss Smudger– a dewy balm for eyelids.

Worn alone or over eyeshadow, and ideal for glowy summer looks, in the heat this product has a pretty thin, watery consistency when applied.

This means it isn’t sticky and I don’t need a lot of product.  But also means the look it achieves is fairly short-lived.

I’m also not sure I would describe the result as a gloss- more of a slight dewiness- which could work well as part of a summertime no-makeup or yoga skin look, but is firmly on the subtle end of the spectrum.

For those looking for a full-blown wet look though, it might be worth checking out the alternatives from Kevyn Aucoin or Nars.

In terms of staying power, while the Smudger keeps its dewiness for an hour or two after application, even using a setting spray this needs to be reapplied regularly.

The Full List of Ingredients

Polybutene, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Silica dimethyl silylate/ silica dimethyl silylate, Isononyl isononanoate, Caprylyl Glycol, Tocopherol

The Takeaway

Overall I’m loving the subtle, healthy glow this offers for a no-makeup look, and this tube’s tiny size means it would fit into pretty much an bag for reapplication on the go.

On the other hand, this really isn’t hugely long-lasting, which also affects the staying-power of any eye shadow this is used over.

Great for: A dewy eye look.

Not-so-great for: Using over eye shadows as it tends to make them move around.

YSL’s Eye Gloss Smudger is £22 for 13.7 g, Boots UK and $30 for 13.7 g, YSL Beauty US
