Michael Douglas is a celebrity hair stylist with a passion for empowering beauty fans to feel more confident with their hair. He is also a regular Live That Glow columnist, answering readers questions on all things hair care. Here, he advises on how to tackle frizz.

Why does my hair always go frizzy, even after conditioning and styling, and even if it’s not humid outside?
Michael says:
There are numerous reasons why your hair may go frizzy even after you blow dried it.

The main thing to remember is that moisture or humidity is the enemy. Now, it may well be that you think there is no moisture in the atmosphere on a sunny day or a cloudy day or a dry day, but that is not the case.

There is literally always moisture in the atmosphere unless it’s extremely cold and dry and in that case, the moisture mainly sticks to cold surfaces like glass or cars etc. So you need to protect the cortex of the hair from the moisture in the atmosphere. As soon as moisture enters the cortex of the hair it breaks down what is called the sulphur bonds or also known as temporary bonds which are the bonds that form the hairstyle, be it curly, smooth, straight or wavy

Using styling products like mousse and a blow dry spray is a great way of just pushing back that moisture and creating a barrier from the moisture in the atmosphere to the sulphur bonds in your hair.

Ingredients like PVP VA copolymer are very good at doing this so look out for these. However there are other ingredients in products such as the Prologue by Arkive by Adam Reed. This has a collection of ingredients that are extremely good at being moisture resistant. Another product that’s worth trying is Dream Coat from Colour Wow, as this also has a combination of ingredients that are very good at repelling unwanted moisture.

It is very important that these products are dried into the hair with a hot hair dryer. Use the mdlondon BLOW with the large nozzle and combine that with the mdlondon BOAR brush. This technique creates a reaction within the product that makes it actively resistant to moisture.

The other thing that is worth mentioning is that people don’t blow dry their hair enough to ensure that it is completely dry before finishing.

If you leave any moisture at all in the hair, it will break down the hairstyle and create frizz. So for example, if you blow dry your hair for 10 minutes and it generally feels dry but you go outside or you go to work and it goes frizzy again, it’s highly likely you have not blow dried your hair enough.

The hair must be hot/ very warm to the touch to indicate that it is properly dry. When all the moisture has been removed from the hair, the style will be set in place and will last longer.

Another good tip is that when blow drying the hair, leave the blow dry brush in the hair until it has cooled down, then remove the brush. The cooling down of hot hair goes through a process that can prolong the life of the blow dry and reduce the amount of frizz that can occur afterwards.
