You’ve heard of it over on the beauty grapevine (AKA TikTok and Instagram) but do you really know what a lash lift is?

Ok, it’s obvious from the name. But you might be wondering about the other details like what is actually involved in the lash lifting process? Does it hurt? How much does it cost? And how long do the results last?

Well, wonder no more because we’ve got all the answers for you, thanks to founder of Laid and Lashed, Emma Casey and Dionne Phillips, eyelash and beauty expert and founder and owner of D’Lashes Lash & Wellness Spa Beverly Hills.

So keep scrolling to find out everything you need to know about lash lifts before you take the plunge.

What is a lash lift?

“It’s like a ‘perm’ for your eyelashes,” says Casey. “It’s a semi-permanent treatment that lifts and curls your natural lashes, using a chemical solution that’s carefully applied while shaping and lifting your lashes with a silicone pad.”

“It’s perfect for those who want a natural yet enhanced look, giving your lashes that extra “wow” factor,” adds Phillips. “Imagine waking up every day with lashes that look effortlessly fabulous!”

Ok, we’re imagining it and we’re liking it.

What is involved in the appointment?

You start with a consultation to determine your lash type and what results you’d like to see. “Then, your eyelashes will be cleansed, and tape will be applied to your lower lashes to ensure that they don’t get stuck,” explains Casey.

“Special tools called lash lift shields are used to curl your eyelashes, and your artist will carefully brush each lash into a perfect, isolated position. Your lash artist will use a few different materials and rounds of application to set your lash lift, always adjusting and perfecting the positions of your lashes along the way.”

If you are having your lashes tinted at the same appointment, this will be done last. “Finally, the solution, shields, and tape will get removed and your lash lift will be done!”

How long does it take?

It depends on the salon. Phillips says between 45-60 minutes while Casey says more like an hour.

Does it hurt?

Thankfully, no. “The lifting process doesn’t hurt at all,” Casey says. “The risks associated with lash lifts are typically related to bad-quality products used or inexperienced artists. Since chemicals are being used, it’s important to use top-quality products and get the service from someone experienced.”

Phillips adds, “You might feel a slight pressure from the silicone rod, but most of my clients find the experience quite relaxing—some even take a little nap!”

How should you prep for your appointment?

Casey says it’s pretty minimal. “It’s ideal to show up with a clean face and no makeup,” she says. “And ensure you don’t have any eyelash extensions on.”

“Avoid using any waterproof mascara or oily products around your eyes 24 hours before your appointment,” Phillips adds. “This ensures that the lifting solution can work its magic without any barriers.

“Also, if you wear contact lenses, it’s a good idea to remove them before the treatment. Other than that, just come in ready to relax and let me take care of the rest!”

What’s the aftercare like?

“You should avoid getting your eyelashes wet or applying makeup for about 24 hours after your appointment,” advises Casey. “This will help the lash lift set and will make it last as long as possible!”

“No swimming, hot tubs, or saunas, and be careful with washing your face,” Phillips adds. Also avoid eye makeup. “You’ll also want to skip mascara and any oil-based products around your eyes during this time,” she says.

“After the first day, you can resume your regular beauty routine, but I recommend using a lash conditioner to keep your lashes nourished and looking their best. And remember, don’t rub your eyes or use a lash curler—your lashes are already perfect!”

How long do the results last?

“Typically, the results of a lash lift last about 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle,” explains Phillips. “As your lashes naturally shed and regrow, the curl will gradually relax. For some, the lift may last a bit longer, especially with proper aftercare.”

How much does a lash lift typically cost?

“Lash lift costs can range between $70-$120,” says Casey. In the UK it’s between around the £45 – £100 mark.

Phillips adds, “Prices can vary depending on where you go, but at D’Lashes, the cost typically ranges from $100 to $150. It’s a small investment for big, beautiful results that last for weeks! Plus, when you consider that you won’t need to fuss with a lash curler or even mascara, it’s a game-changer for your beauty routine.”

The takeaway

A pain-free treatment that gives you fabulous lashes and makes you feel like you’ve had a spa treatment? Phillips even calls it a “push-up bra” for your lashes! It’s a no-brainer, as long as you can afford it.

Don’t forget to arrive makeup-free and avoid getting your lashes wet for 24 hours after your appointment. And always go to a reputable lash artist to avoid any risks.
