Ruby Hammer MBE is a celebrity makeup artist, brand founder and regular Live That Glow columnist. She has been providing makeup education for more than 30 years. Here, she advises a reader on how to stop their lipstick transferring.
My lipstick always seems to transfer when I eat or drink, whatever brand I use. How do I stop it transferring?
Ruby says:
Lipstick will always transfer to some extent, but here are my biggest tips for how to minimise it.
- Choose the right formula: A matte or liquid lipstick tends to last longer, whereas glossy or creamy formulas will transfer more easily. Lip stains are often even longer lasting, and some formulas, like Wonderskin’s Wonder Blading Lip Stain, may not need reapplication throughout the day at all.
- Layer, then set: If you don’t want to have to buy a whole new product though, apply your lipstick, blot with a tissue, dust with a light layer of translucent powder, then reapply. This creates a budge-proof stain effect.
- Lip liner helps grip: Filling in your lips with a pencil before lipstick gives the colour something to cling to, extending your wear time.
- Be aware of certain foods: Oily and greasy foods break down lip products faster, so be prepared to touch up afterwards.
- Use a straw: A straw helps reduce the amount of direct contact between your lips and the glass when you’re drinking, preventing unnecessary transfer.
