Dr Sonia Khorana is a GP with a special interest in dermatology and Live That Glow’s own skincare agony aunt. She is passionate about helping people feel confident in their own skin. In this month’s column, she advises about how to find a sunscreen that doesn’t break you out.
I find that every sunscreen I use breaks me out. I’ve tried mineral and chemical formulas, and ones that are formulated for sensitive/acne skin too. I don’t want to not wear SPF but I hate breaking out. What do you suggest?
Dr Sonia says:
SPF related breakouts are a really common issue. It’s not always about sunscreen itself, but about what’s around it in the formula, how it’s layered, and how your skin is prepped.
Some sunscreens can be heavy or waxy, which traps oil, sweat, and bacteria which can contribute to breakouts. I’d make sure you look at the ingredients and test the texture before buying if possible. It should feel lightweight and be a very light/gel-like texture (ideally labelled suitable for oily/acne prone skin).
Also avoid layering too many products and make sure you remove them properly at night with a good cleanser.
There are also a couple of other tips which might help you avoid breakouts from your sunscreen:
- Instead of committing to a full face, apply your SPF on just one cheek or your jawline for a few days to see if you have any reactions.
- You could also consider skipping a moisturiser under SPF if it’s already hydrating (many modern sunscreens double as moisturisers).
- Try mineral powders or SPF setting sprays for top ups
Daily sunscreen is essential for dealing with post inflammatory pigmentation/erythema (acne marks), and long-term skin health.
We have so many options now available on the market so the key is in trying out different formulas (with the above in mind) and I’m sure you’ll find something that works!
