Jordan Samuel Pacitti is an aesthetician, skincare founder and regular Live That Glow columnist. He is a go-to source of beauty advice for skincare fans across the world. Here, he advises a reader on the skin flooding trend that’s been popping up all over TikTok.

All my TikTok is covered in skin flooding. Is it really better for skin or is it just another random skincare trend that doesn’t do anything?

Jordan says:

Skin flooding has been gaining traction in popularity for the past year; however, while the trend is new, the concept is anything but. In fact, it is something that aestheticians have been regularly practicing in the treatment room and on themselves for years.

In short, it is a fancy, prettily packaged way to refer to the act of layering hydrating products over and over to maximise hydration and help relieve the skin of dehydration and dryness. While this is not a miraculous skincare trend, it is a practice from which many people can benefit.

To engage in skin flooding, simply apply layers of hydrating products to clean, damp skin, and then continue to build up the layers until skin feels fully hydrated, plump and glowing. The focus should be on lightweight, humectant rich products, which can come in the form of toners, mists, essences, serums, etc., and should contain ingredients, like glycerin, aloe Vera, sodium PCA, and hyaluronic acid, among others.

While skin flooding can be very beneficial to chronically dehydrated skins and skins with compromised barriers, as well as dull and dry skin, be mindful of not overcomplicating it. A lot of these products—toners, mists, essences and even some serums—can be one in the same. So, you might already be doing a mini version of skin flooding and not even know it!

It is also important to bear in mind that despite working well for a specific group of skin conditions, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and may potentially be adding unnecessary steps to your skincare routine.
