Michael Douglas is a celebrity hair stylist with a passion for empowering beauty fans to feel more confident with their hair. He is also a regular Live That Glow columnist, answering readers questions on all things hair care. Here, he advises on how to get salon-worthy results from home. Got a question for Michael? Send it to columnists@livethatglow.com for a chance to have it featured.

I feel like my hair never looks quite as good when I do it myself as it does when I leave a salon – even when I’m using the same products and tools. What are hairdressers actually doing differently, and what are the little tricks we can steal at home?

Michael says:

This is a great question and a very common problem. First thing to remember is the hairdresser is trained usually very well to create a very brilliant finished result.

For me, the finished result is everything. How you look in the mirror at the end is a great measure of how well the hairdresser or you have styled your hair.

My main quest in my career is to help people get a brilliant result at home by themselves. Now good tools and good products are a great starting point. The mdlondon BLOW hair dryer is designed for this purpose. The extra large wide nozzle makes blow drying easier and faster. The extra long radial brushes that I’ve made to work in conjunction with the nozzle are also hugely helpful.

The trick is to learn the technique of blow drying your hair. The angle which the airflow comes out of the dryer onto the hair and onto the brush is really the secret. To get amazing smooth shiny hair you need to make sure that all the hairs are doing the same thing at the same time and you do this by angling the airflow down the hair shaft and onto the brush.

The other trick is to try and keep the brush moving slightly so the hair is constantly being smoothed. Once all the moisture is removed from the hair, it is then styled. The hair gets styled the moment it goes from damp to dry. Whatever is happening to the hair in that moment is “styling.”

Using styling products like the ones I created, such as THE 2 and THE 7 in conjunction with this styling technique of blow drying will give you an amazing result and a long lasting effect.

So in short the answer to having really great style hair is in you.   You are the missing piece.  If you can learn to blow dry or style your hair well, then you can always have  great looking hair. It can be difficult to learn to do this at the beginning, but once you have learnt it, you will know it forever. My business mdlondon is created to literally encourage help and teach people how to style their own hair so it can always look good.
