I’ve tried primer, no primer, setting spray, powder, no powder… it either slides off my T-zone or clings to dry patches on my cheeks. I feel like I’m following all the “rules” but it still looks worse the more I do. Is there actually a simple way to make it last or is it just my skin type?

Ruby says:

What you are describing is classic combination, slightly dehydrated skin. Oil through the centre, dryness through the outer areas and a texture that causes makeup to both slip and catch.

This is why everything feels contradictory. Oil-control products can exaggerate dryness, while richer textures can encourage movement.

The solution is not one product. Through the T-zone, use less product overall. Apply a targeted primer, pressed in gently. Keep foundation light and set only where necessary.

On the cheeks, skip primer entirely. Focus on skin preparation. A lightweight but effective moisturiser such as Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré will smooth the surface without excess slip.

Choose a base that has some flexibility and movement. Heavier, matte formulas tend to emphasise dryness. Something like Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint works well.

Avoid applying one uniform layer across the face. That is what creates both slipping and patchiness. Instead, build in thin layers, adjusting to each area.

And invest where it matters. Use the best complexion products you can afford. You want the skin to look and feel like skin, not covered or masked.
