I love wearing lip colour but I find that it doesn’t always stay within my lip line. How do I stop my lipsticks and lip stains from feathering?
Ruby says:
Feathering happens when product bleeds into the fine lines around your lips, which can be caused by formula texture, excessive moisture, or even skin texture. To prevent this:
- Prep Properly – If you’ve used a balm or salve, blot it off completely before applying lip colour. You want hydration without excess slip. Exfoliating your lips beforehand also helps create a smooth base.
- Use a Lip Brush for Precision – Applying straight from the bullet works for some, but using a lip brush allows better control, especially along the lip edges.
- Lip Liner is Key – Use a matching lip pencil or a clear wax-based lip liner to create a barrier that prevents movement. A slightly firmer pencil will act as a stopper for feathering.
- Layering for Longevity – Apply a thin layer of lipstick, blot with a single-ply tissue, and reapply. This helps the pigment adhere and reduces excess product that could migrate.
- Set Strategically – You can lightly dust translucent powder over your lips with a fluffy brush or even press through a single-ply tissue for a diffused, locked-in effect.
- Formula Matters – Satin and glossy formulas will move more, whereas matte and stain-based formulas tend to stay put longer. If longevity is your priority, opt for a long-wearing or semi-matte formula.
- Check and Refresh – Lip products, especially creamy ones, will shift with eating and drinking. Keep a mirror handy for quick touch-ups, and be mindful of greasy foods that break down lipstick faster.
