No matter how many ‘glass hair’ tricks I try, my ends still look dry and my blow-dries lose their shine halfway through the day. What’s the most realistic, next-level upgrade I can make to get healthy, glossy, expensive-looking hair every day?

Michael says:

This is quite literally the million dollar question and it’s a different answer for different people depending on hair type and expectations.

The way to get hair to shine is to reflect light off it and to make sure that the surface of the hair is very smooth. Obviously some people’s hair is naturally smooth and other people’s hair is not. So let’s approach this as though you’ve got hair that is naturally coarse and frizzy and therefore doesn’t reflect the light very well.

First of all you need to put a really good blow dry into the hair using a hairdryer like the mdlondon BLOW with a nozzle and also combine that with a boar bristle radial brush. The more bristles you have in a brush, the more control you have over all the strands of hair.

What you’re trying to do is to get all the hairs to do the same thing at the same time and in this instance make them all smooth and straight. As long as you are manipulating the hair into a straight smooth fashion while it’s drying from damp to dry, you should get a very smooth, sleek finish on the hair.

One thing I would suggest here is to try not to put too much tension on the hair while drying it. When the hair is wet, it is more stretchy – if you stretch it too much and dry it then it will look good for an hour or two, but as the moisture starts to penetrate the hair, the hair strands start to shrink back to their original length and become frizzy. So you can blow dry the hair smooth but be careful not to stretch it too much during the blow drying process.

Using a styling product like Color Wow Dream Coat is fab for creating a barrier between the moisture in the atmosphere under the hair. Moisture is the enemy. Once the hair is dry, you could then run some straightening irons through it to create the glass like finish. You may need to practice a little but this procedure is great for getting that smooth finish.

Remember though you need a lot of light bouncing off the hair for it to appear to be glass like.
