What face shape do you have? Is it oval? Heart-shaped? Or do you rock a square shape?

We are all unique, and that individuality comes in all shapes and sizes. So, whatever your face shape, it’s handy to know how to make the best of it or create a certain illusion using your blusher.

My face shape is round. So, when applying blush, I try to position it in a way that makes my face appear a little more angular. Here, I take you through all the face shapes with each one’s most flattering blush placement.

With expert tips from Andrew Grella, CEO and founder of Formen Makeup, here’s how to use your blusher to its full potential.

How to apply blusher on an oval face

Grella says to aim high! “For the oval-shaped face, ideally, one must apply a blush higher up toward the temples,” he explains.

“This method will make your face appear broader in size. Focusing the colour on the high area of the cheeks helps to define their natural structure and makes them look fresh and young.”

How to apply blusher on a round face

*Sits up and listens* “Blush applications for round faces aim to bring about distinction and provide lift,” says Grella.

“Start applying blush by drawing a half-moon shape starting from an inner eye corner towards the outer temple edge. This will help lift your visage making it have more shape and contour.”

I tend to find a cream blusher works well here as it creates a slight sheen on the cheekbone, emphasising the illusion of a more angular face further.

How to apply blusher on a square face

If you have a square face shape, you’ll want to make your cheeks appear more rounded to create balance. “Blush should be applied in a small circle on the middle cheekbone,” explains Grella.

“This technique creates rounder-looking cheeks which would balance out a strong jawline thus giving a softer, more balanced look. Square faces can use blusher to soften angular features better than anything else.”

How to apply blusher on a heart-shaped face

A heart-shaped face means you have a slim jawline, pointed chin and bloomin’ great cheekbones. Lucky you! But you may want to soften your lines a little.

“Heart-shaped faces require a blusher that enhances and softens their features,” Grella says. “Apply blush in a semi-circular motion from near the inner eye to just before the temple to create the illusion of depth between the cheekbone and sharp chin.”

How to apply blusher on a diamond-shaped face

Another three cheers for the cheekbones, plus a narrow eye and jawline, Grella says that diamond face shapes should work to emphasize their bone structure.

“You need to accentuate the naturally high cheekbones,” he explains. “Start with a small sliver of blush along the top of the cheekbone between the mid-eye point and until the outside eye edge. In this position, you will elevate your high cheekbones whilst still retaining symmetry within your face.”

The takeaway

Learning clever ways to accentuate your favourite features (and make your least favourites blend into the background) is totally doable with your blusher. There’s nothing like a bit of makeup trickery to boost your confidence!

Aim high if you have an oval face shape, remember the semi-circle trick for round and heart shapes, think small and circular if you’re square shaped and don’t forget the narrow line of blush for diamond shapes.
