I know I’m supposed to get my hair trimmed every six to eight weeks but I really want to grow the length.  What actually happens if I don’t get a trim when I’m supposed to?

Michael says:

Getting your hair trimmed regularly is a good idea to maintain the ends of the hair and the style that you have. If you want to grow your hair then it’s best not to get it cut too often.

If you can imagine that your hair grows about one centimetre a month so if you got your haircut every six weeks you’re cutting off over a centimetre of growth.

Your hair is growing very slowly because what is being grown is also being cut. So if you want to grow your hair, ideally you would not get it cut until roughly every 15 to 20 weeks and try and have the tiniest amount cut off it when you do.

Hair at the ends is older hair so it’s been through more wear and tear and therefore is more prone to breakage and damage. Having it trimmed regularly prevents the ends from splitting and breaking off.

Now this is only a worry if your hair is fine, damaged and fragile. Thicker, coarser hair that’s less damaged is far less likely to break and therefore far less likely to need trimming as you grow it.

The more delicate and thin your hair is the more prone it is to breakage and therefore it’s a good idea to get that type of hair trimmed more regularly while growing it – but saying that, I would be aiming to get it trimmed every 15 to 20 weeks not every 6 to 8.

Using products on your hair such as the new Bond Repair Protein range from OGX is a great idea to help repair the hair but also protect it from damage, therefore growing healthier for longer especially where the ends are concerned.
