I’ve seen a skincare influencer I really trust say that you have to wash your face for at least 20 seconds in the evenings for it actually to be clean. Is that right?
Jordan says:
While there are no hard and fast rules on how long you need to cleanse your skin for it to be effective there are definitely certain things you can do to get the most from your cleanser.
First and foremost, make sure you are using the correct cleanser for your skin type and skin condition. Next, make sure you are using the correct amount of product to be able to get to every nook and cranny around your face.
Also, the time it takes to properly cleanse the skin often depends on how many layers of sunscreen or how much makeup you are wearing pre-cleanse. If you are removing a heavier application of either and/or both, you will want to make sure to really massage the cleanser into your skin, as spending a bit of extra time helps to really ensure you are getting everything off. If you feel that the first cleanse wasn’t enough, you can certainly follow up with a second cleanse to sufficiently remove everything.
Even though there is not a one-size-fits-all timespan to ensure your facial skin has been sufficiently cleansed, I always stress that cleansing, along with sunscreen application, are the most important steps in any skincare regimen.
Many unwanted skin issues stem from not properly removing makeup and sunscreen, leaving the skin irritated and/or broken out. So, while it may seem like an unimportant step or something that can be performed haphazardly, it can be very worthwhile to spend a little extra time cleansing, as it truly sets the stage for the rest of your routine.
