Are Hair Accessories the Easiest Beauty Trend *Ever*?

Hair accessories have often taken a back seat for me when it comes to getting ready. I’ve never given them much thought, focusing instead on meticulously styling my hair, devoid of any embellishments.

But recently hair accessories have taken over my social media feeds, with both new and trendy add-ons and timeless, classic enhancements to the hair.

Now, with a bit of exploration and experimentation, a hair accessory is something I rarely go without; because apart from anything else, they’re basically foolproof and instantly elevate my look.

It’s never been easier to decorate your hair, and below are some of my favourite ways (no hair skills required).

Claw clips

The resurgence of 90s fashion brought with it the boyfriend jean, bold patterns, and, crucially, the claw clip.

The added embellishment of a hair accessory has never left the trend-cycle, but post-lockdown life saw claw clips adorning the hair of every trendy girl.

As a university student, the image of a lecture hall flocked with locks kept together with claw-clips truly cemented their popularity, and I was quick to hop on-board of this trend which can make any look seem put-together.

For a *super* easy way to wear a claw clip in a way that suggest maximum effort, put your hair in a pony before parting your hair just above your hairband and bringing the length of your hair up through the part.  As you pull it through, twist your hair and secure with a claw clip.

To get an idea of what that looks like, check out Instagrammer @aktabavalia_’s video below.

Ribbons

“Ballerina-core” is perhaps to be thanked for the insurgence of ribbons as a hair accessory, a dainty antithesis to the bulky claw clip.

They add a feminine touch to even the most masculine-seeming outfit, and fashion influencer @Kat_Latte shares how ribbons help her “embrace her femininity as something not to be ashamed of”.

These don’t have to be bought from high-end boutiques- your local haberdashery sells them in abundance for cheap, and I use mine to ornament the ends of my plaits for a girly, youthful charm.

This might just be, fashion artist @BaileeJones attests, the “most accessible trend of 2023”.

To get in on this beauty trend, either tie a bow around the top of your ponytail (where your hair tie goes) or do like @Kat_Latte and put hair in a plait before tying bows at the top and bottom.

If that still seems like too much hassle, you can always buy an oversized bow complete with its own clip and slide into hair. For a won’t-break-the-bank option, ASOS has bows starting from £8 /$14.

Hair jewellery

Last summer, festival-goers donned an exciting, purely decorative hair accessory: Hair jewellery was seen everywhere, be it small silver hoops expertly placed into plaits or pearls positioned in buns.

The versatility of hair jewellery is not be understated: whether it’s a boho-chic aesthetic, or a more sophisticated air, small embellishments deftly positioned in the hair are an easy way elevate your appearance.

Scrunchies

A scrunchie on the wrist was once a subtle hallmark of a trendy girl, but this year maximalist scrunchies take centre stage. These giant frills of fabric repel inconspicuousness, and give the hair an effortless, eccentric appeal.

A creator of these funky, florid scrunchies @MadeByNelly agrees that the allure lies in their playfulness. “They celebrate everything we love about our childhoods,” she says.

I wear my MadeByNelly Scrunchie in a messy bun to enliven my outfit, and can confirm these catch peoples’ eye!

The most simple way to wear one is with your hair in a classic low bun, secured with your favourite scrunchie.

Hair clips

A trend I’m loving is hair clips, and, as with the scrunchies, the bigger the better.

My Instagram feed is full of oversized hair clips pinning back slicked hair. Sustainable fashion influencer @DaughterOfaHoarder pairs hers with a typically girlish outfit to provide contrast, and agrees the “oversized clip moment is very much in”.

Whether your hair is flowing down or in a sleek pony, hair clips prove a stylish enhancement which I know we will be seeing more of!
