Is Color Wow’s Dream Coat *Really* the Secret to Sleek Hair?

For those battling frizz and humidity, finding the right product to keep hair smooth and manageable without weighing it down or making it greasy is a game-changer.

And one product that’s been generating serious buzz among beauty enthusiasts and professionals alike is the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray by Color Wow. With its promise of anti-humidity protection, frizz control, and a mirror-like shine, Dream Coat has become a go-to for stylists and users seeking a glass-like finish on every strand.

Launched in 2017, this supposed miracle spray went big when Kim Kardashian’s hairdresser Chris Appleton posted a TikTok showing its results in 2022. And, since then, I have seen this product literally everywhere.

I’ve got (quite recently discovered) wavy hair that’s super long (like, almost down to my bum) but, because of this, my hair can sometimes look a bit frizzy when it’s approaching wash day and the waves are dropping out. It can also be difficult to get a smooth, sleek finish on my hair. I wanted to give Dream Coat a try to see whether it could give me shinier hair when styling it straight…

But does this spray really live up to the hype? I’m taking an in-depth look at what makes Dream Coat so “supernatural” and whether it’s truly the miracle solution for frizz-free, stunningly smooth hair.

The product details

The brand describes this spray as the “#1 Anti-frizz treatment” that “waterproofs your hair to stop frizz, even in the worst humidity” by forming “an invisible, hydrophobic matrix” on the hair.

It uses an “Advanced anti-frizz formula [that] leaves hair super glossy, glassy, ultra smooth” and “groundbreaking humidity-blocking technology stops moisture from wrecking your style”. It also offers 2 types of heat protectant, so you don’t need to worry about a separate protecting product when using this.

Sounds pretty supernatural to me.

It uses heat-activated polymer technology to smooth the hair and prevent it from frizz by repelling moisture. It comes in a pretty hefty 200ml bottle for the regular size ($28.00/£27.00). You can also get this in a larger 500ml size($58.00/£57.00) and a smaller 50ml travel size ($12.00/£12.50).

First impressions

Firstly, I really like the bottle this comes in – a shiny, mirror-like rectangle-shaped bottle with a spray mechanism.

I unscrewed the lid to have a sniff and wow, it smells really chemically which isn’t what I expected. Some people have described this as a “clean, floral scent” but I’m afraid I really don’t agree with that! To me, it smells like a clean, medical scent. The good news is that, when sprayed on the hair, the smell isn’t that noticeable, but it’s not a scent I expect from a hair product.

The formula is as thin as water, and sprays really easily on the hair without leaving a sticky or slippery feel that you usually get from smoothing products.

The application process

The brand says to shampoo, condition, and towel dry your hair, before dividing it into sections. Spray liberally and evenly on damp (not wet) hair. Do not apply other styling products while the hair is wet, you can apply styling products after blow drying. Dream Coat requires blow-drying with tension to activate the ingredients, and you should use it every 3 – 4 shampoos.

I towel-dried my hair and clipped the top half up while spraying the bottom section in 2 halves. Then, I sprayed one half of the top section before spraying the second half of the top section. To make sure all of my hair was covered, I brushed this through before sectioning it off again for blow drying.

The brand says you need tension to activate the spray, so I used a round brush which also helps to create body and a smoother finish.

My results

This is just super easy to use! The spray mechanism is great and allows you to coat all of the hair – worlds apart from some products where the spray is a measly dribble. It’s much more like a mist, which is perfect for application and ensuring the hair is covered without it being sopping wet again.

Note, though, that the brand says to apply this very liberally to be able to coat each strand of hair. It can’t be used on dry hair and you must use a blowdryer and tension.

It took a few minutes to completely coat my hair and brush it through, before blow drying as normal. Since you need to activate this product with heat and tension from the brush, I decided to go for a straight hairstyle, and I noticed that it was slightly sleeker than usual.

My hair isn’t particularly damaged and I haven’t dyed it in years, leaving a kind of ombre colour which is darker towards the roots. I don’t regularly use heat styling and, if I do, I will quickly run the straighteners over it or curl the ends with a wand. As I mentioned earlier, my hair is wavy, so I rarely blow dry it (unless I want a straight hairstyle) and usually opt for the curly girl method, letting it air dry naturally into shape.

It’s worth noting that Color Wow does have a Dream Coat for curly and wavy hair, however, I’m testing out the original Supernatural Spray.

The results from this product might have convinced me to blow dry it straight more often because it does feel very sleek and smooth, and it looks a little bit shinier!

It left no scent on my hair, I could just smell my shampoo and conditioner.

How long do they last

So, I didn’t notice any ground-breaking results with this spray, but my hair did stay sleeker and straighter until my next wash day (3 days). There were no signs of frizz to report and it seemed to be less tangled. I feel like this would be great to use before putting my heatless curl kit in (after blowdrying my hair, of course) because I think it will give a smoother wave that doesn’t get tangled throughout the day.

I find that products like this can make your hair turn greasy quickly, but I didn’t experience that with Dream Coat – which is a huge plus for me because I find washing my hair pretty tedious!

What other users are saying

I’m yet to see many negative comments about this spray! One user on the Color Wow website writes “My hair usually starts getting oily the day after shampooing. With the WOW products, my hair stayed greaseless for a whole week. My hair maintained it’s volume as well! Love these products!”

Another says “I was skeptical, but it really does last through multiple washes. That made it five stars for me!”

Over on TikTok, One user comments “LOVEEE!!! My hair has been in humidity and stayed straight for 4 days then just needed to wash on day 5 and just super amazed at how straight it stays”, and another says “I spray each strand then blow dry that strand then the next strand and repeat until Its done it’s time consuming but it works. It can last a week”.

The only negatives I have seen are from those with really dry, damaged, or dehydrated hair. One user on TikTok says “It didn’t work for me i have super dry hair and it doesn’t work for me”, while another asks “Why didn’t work on my frizzy hair?”

A couple of people also mentioned that their hair felt sticky or greasy after “Anyone else’s hair feel sticky after? I drenched sections and heat tension dried it but so ‘sticky'” – however, I didn’t experience this at all!

FYI – *Many commented on how to actually use the product and a lot of people questioned how much they need to apply and whether using heat is essential. You really do need to section the hair off and spray it liberally, and the product won’t work as well (if at all) if you apply products before Dream Coat or if you don’t use a hairdryer and a brush to create tension.*

Overall value for money

I wouldn’t usually spend almost £30.00 on a hair product but, according to some reviews, this 200ml bottle goes a long way. Because you only need to use this every 3 – 4 washes unlike other products that require you to use them on every wash, I think this is pretty good value for money if you find this product really works on your hair.

The travel size being 50ml and only £12.50 is also pretty good value for money, in my opinion. Many affordable serums and sprays cost around the same price for the same volume of product.

I’ve seen a few people comparing Dream Coat to MirrorGlaze’s Super Sleek Shine Spray ($18.00/£16.00 for 190ml), however, some people don’t agree that this provides the same results as Color Wow’s – it does contain some of the same ingredients, though.

Other than this, I haven’t seen any other dupes that seem to have the same result!

The takeaway

I enjoyed using this spray and I do think it provides great results. My hair isn’t extremely frizzy but it still gives it extra shine and sleekness – so I think this is a great spray for those with very dry, damaged, or frizzy hair.

Considering the virality of the product, I think the price point is pretty good and the travel size is still a good amount of product for less than £15.00! A great way to try it out before you invest in the full size.
