Here, he advises a reader on double cleansing with acne. Got a question for Jordan? Send it to columnists@livethatglow.com for a chance to have it featured.

If my skin gets red easily and I’m dealing with hormonal acne on my chin, is double cleansing too much? I’m scared of over-cleansing but also don’t feel clean enough at night.

Jordan says:

Double cleansing can be a great tool for almost all skin conditions; however, it is not a necessity.

If you do decide to double cleanse, there a few important points to keep in mind.

First, double cleansing the skin at night simply means cleansing the skin twice. There is no hard and fast rule dictating that “the first cleanse should be an oil-based cleanser, and the second cleanse should be a gel cleanser.” While many gravitate toward this combination, you just need to make sure you are cleansing the skin twice with whatever you prefer. It is a perfectly valid choice to use the same product for both cleanses.

Second, depending on the type of cleanser you are using, you don’t always have to remove it with a washcloth. This tip is very important, especially if you’re dealing with redness and hormonal acne. You don’t want to over scrub or overstimulate the skin in the cleansing process. If you are using a cleanser that you prefer to remove with a washcloth, I highly recommend facial quality microfibre cloths, as they are super gentle but help to thoroughly remove excess product, dirt, oil and grime.

As always, use gentle pressure and don’t overdo it.

Separately, as I said above, double cleansing is not a necessity. If you prefer to do a single cleanse at night, make sure you are choosing a cleanser that will remove SPF, dirt, oil, grime and makeup (if you are wearing any). If you opt for a single cleanse, I do recommend using a clean gentle washcloth to enhance removal and completely cleanse the skin.

Another simple but overlooked tip is making sure you are using enough cleanser and massaging the cleanser thoroughly into your skin as well.

Whatever way you decide to cleanse, always make sure you are choosing the right cleanser(s) for your skin condition, cleansing gently and removing properly.
