Hot weather may be great for many things (cue scenes of ice cream trucks and lazy days at the beach) but hair volume is sadly not one of them.  Yes, as the weather gets hotter, our hair often gets, well… flatter.

Luckily, there’s plenty we can do to restore body and pump up hair volume to the max, whether the hotter weather is suddenly leaving your less than full-bodied or you struggle for volume whatever the weather.

Here are five of the quickest ways to get a voluminous, healthy look with the minimum of effort.

1. Choose the Right Hair Products

The first step to creating volume in your hair is to choose products that actively promote lift.

Look out for products specifically designed for adding body, including volumising shampoos and conditioners. The products are often formulated to plump out hair, giving it a fuller appearance without even styling it.

Another product to consider is a volumizing mousse. This lightweight styling product that is great for adding volume and texture to your hair is super easy to use.  Just run a golf ball-sized amount of mousse through damp hair before blow-drying using a round brush to create lift and volume from the crown all the way through the ends of your hair.

2. Use the Right Tools

Tools can be a girl’s best friend and the right ones can have a serious effect on how much volume you create.

This is where a round brush come in to its own since its shape allows for a smooth finish without flattening hair down while blow drying it.

To maximise volume while using a round brush first begin with a section of hair at the base of your roots before rolling the brush down through the section, pointing your hairdryer at your brush as you go.

For bonus volume and smoothness, choose a brush with a ceramic or tourmaline barrel, which will heat as your blow dry, helping to dry your hair more evenly.

Another tool to consider is a diffuser attachment for your hair dryer. Diffusers are designed to help distribute heat evenly and gently over a larger area, which helps to reduce frizz and create volume in your hair.

3. Blow-Dry Your Hair Upside Down

Another classic tip while blow drying is to blow-drying your hair upside down.

When you blow-dry your hair upside down, you’re essentially lifting your roots away from your scalp, which creates instant lift and volume.

To do this, flip your head upside down and use a round brush to lift and separate your hair as you blow-dry it in sections as above.

Once hair is dry, flip your head back up, use your fingers to style your hair into place, and enjoy the results of your hard work.

4. Tease Your Hair

Teasing your hair is another great way to add volume and texture.

Another tip used by women over decades to give hair a fuller look, to tease your hair start by sectioning off a small section at the crown of your head.

Next, use a fine-toothed comb to gently backcomb the hair within around two inches of your roots in short strokes toward your scalp.

Repeat this process on a few more sections of hair, and then use your fingers to smooth the top layer of hair over the teased sections.

Be careful not to over-tease your hair, as this can cause damage and breakage (too much volume may also cause some 1980s flashbacks).

5. Finish with the Right Hairspray

We all know the feeling; you spend ages creating volume to find it wilts within minutes of getting outside.

This is where hairspray comes in, locking that volume into place without weighing down or stiffening hair.

Look for a product specifically designed for adding volume and flexible hold to your hair. When applying, hold the can about 10-12 inches away from your head and spray evenly over your hair. Be sure to focus on the roots and the areas where you want the most lift and volume.
